Spinoff to Birth Plan (if you're planning one)....
Just found this in search for something else....
Create your Birth Plan
Seems easy enough to check off a few boxes. Or at least use it as a guide of discussion with your doctor in your last few visits.
Who knew there were so many options?!
Whether you agree with/want a birth plan or not, just thought this may be helpful info for some.

You do not at all... things will happen all on their own by the baby and the doctors that do this for a living.
However some people like to know their options and all the things that may happen and require an on the spot decision or wish you had a choice for say, an epesiotomy, after the fact.
Just good to know for some, not for others.

LOL! Still don't know on that one!
If you ask someone old school, like my mom, she says epesiotomy all the way.
If you ask someone like my sisters or sister in law who gave birth more recently, they say it's now more preferable to not get it as you may not tear as much or deep as an epesiotomy would be and the healing is different.
I guess at some point I'd ask my doctors what it is they do/prefer and let them make the decision for what is necessary.
Either way, something is most likely going to happen down there and it's going to be sore to sit and pee for while!

Re: Spinoff to Birth Plan....
I didn't and honestly don't think you need one. To me my only goal was to go in and have a healthy baby whatever that meant.
The problem with birth plans - which are nice to have if you have specific goals - is that if something doesn't go smoothly or according to their vision some people have a hard time deviating from them.

That's why I thought this was a nice guideline to share as a good deal of the lines pertaining to labor and delivery state something to effect of "providing baby is not in distress".

Re: Spinoff to Birth Plan (if you're planning one)....
From what I've read episiotomies provide the doctor with a clean line to suture after delivery. This is preferrable for THEM since it takes a shorter amount of time to stitch a solid line. The natural tear is less deep then a cut, as it doesn't go througth the muscle only the superficial layers of skin. But it is a challenge to stitch because of it's erratic pattern. Tears heal more quickly than cuts. And cuts lead to further longterm complications than tears. So, based on this info, if given the choice, I'd rather tear than have a doctor cut me deeply just for his own liability and time factor. I have absolutely no experience in this area and am just going by book and literature info. I welcome opposing facts...Either way, I hate the idea of both though and it really skeeves me to think about.

It was... that's pretty much what I've heard and read as well.
So based on that... what do you think you'd prefer? Whether or not you could choose.
I lean towards tear and just do not discuss it with my mom as she's pro cut!

As a BTDT, I would definitely say I'd rather tear naturally.
From what I've researched, getting an episiotomy makes it more likely for you to tear even worse.
Think about it, a piece of paper that is cut down the middle is easier to tear than a piece of paper that is intact.

Re: Spinoff to Birth Plan (if you're planning one)....
I don't plan on having a birth plan. I plan to go to the hospital, and whatever the peanut needs is what will happen.
Thank you for this website though. It is one of those things that will help me to open up the lines of communication with my doctor and give me a starting point. Although I will trust my doctors, it will be nice to be able to ask what their opinion on episiotmitys are, etc. This way we are both hopefully going into delivery on the same page.

As simple as that sounds.... that's a "birth plan".
You're welcome for the site. That was my reason for posting it.
An added personal note: I see on here quite often that "birth plans" get taken as a 10 page syllabus carved in stone that includes candles, insence, drug free contracts and having the entire maternity floor coming in your room to sing Happy Birthday the second you deliver.
I think of a "birth plan" from anything as simple as a five minute conversation with your doctor(s) to be on the same page to the above mentioned 10 page syllabus (should that be your desire). Of course there is an unwriten disclaimer on anyone's "birth plan" that the baby's and your health comes first and foremost.
Whether it's written, spoken or thought... If you want to let the baby set the way... that's your birth plan. If you want the doctors to be in control and do what they do best... that's your birth plan. If you want your baby wrapped in a Met's jersey before it touches any other cloth... that's your birth plan. If you want to take a shower in the hospital with your favorite cucumber melon spray and put on your best yoga pants... that's your birth plan. Even if you have no plan... Mmmmm then that's your birth plan.

Re: Spinoff to Birth Plan (if you're planning one)....
I made one but it's basically out the window since I am 8 days past my due date and all bets are off for a natural child birth. I really don't think they are necessary and in some cases can increase your stress/disappointment if things don't go according to your plan.
