Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
Sometimes it's hard to describe it.
You just have to understand that it's not for everyone. Everybody has a level of tolerance/comfort in all subjects, not just breastfeeding.

Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
I BF and what made me uncomfy about it was the stigma that goes with it.
I totally wish i could whip my boob out and BF without getting looks of disgust, and that's when covered.
I couldn't even BF in front of my family, they were uncomfy and made me go into a private room. It made it much harder for me, the isolation. I had no shame for my body or my breasts, but i did it cause of them and i hated myself for giving in.
I think that's where my uncomfyness comes from. BF'ing isn't accepted as well here as in Europe. We are taught that boobs are sexual objects and made for sex and for our husbands, not to feed children.
Boobs are no big deal in europe, when i was in italy, i saw many of them at pools, mom's bf'ing, and on TV in the middle of the day. Could you imagine if a boob showed up on TV, remember JANET JACKSon 1/2 a boob on tv for 2 seconds? Holy outrage! Gimme a break!
That's just my opinion.

I didn't say that, i said that boobs are looked upon differently there than here and so is bf'ing.
I personally saw women bf'ing there, but in no way did i mean to convey that's the norm there either.

I totally agree with you here. I BF for a year and will hopefully for at least 6 months with this one, but it took awhile to get comfortable with the idea and I was never really comfortable with the act.

Absolutely! I am European and all the women in my family and other people that we know breastfed...I think it is more of a US issue as opposed to the European issue...

From this end, I would say you might be right. All of my big group of Mommy friends breast fed, most of them mixed fed.

I am European too and most women do not breastfeed. I guess it depends were you come from.
Although it is true that women go topless on the beach and the nudity is more prevalent in TV than in the US, most women do NOT uncover their breasts to breastfeed in Paris. You will get arrested for that. It is consider very INDICENT to do so.

Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
I'm just and never was the type who see's it as a mother/child thing. I think of my breasts as sexual and I cant really get past that and I want it to remain that way.
I also am not a patient person and I know breastfeeding requires patience. I dont want pain and I dont want to continue to have to watch what I eat etc. Selfish maybe? But honest and its why I choose not to.

Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
Honestly? I don't know the exact reason, I just it is something I don't want to do. Maybe it is because in my family and among my friends everyone was or formula feeds, so that is what I am used to.
I understand the benefits that it gives the immune system while you are breast feeding and that is fantastic, but at the same time, I wouldn't be able to do it for more than the time that I am home, so I am not even trying to wrap my mind around trying it.
Also, it is so interesting to me that people are so into breast feeding right now, and when we were babies, it was all formula feeding. My DH was SUPER premature and he was ALWAYS formula fed.

I think so..France is right there at 50% with Scotland. It's interesting to see such variations in europe, all the way to 99% in Norway.
-Italy-It's 85% USA-is 70% UK- 69%

That's an average of different countries.
50% France and Scotland. So that's well below US.

I agree, or just it being hard to look at a breast as anything but sexual (thanks to our twisted society)

Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
I have a question and please forgive me if this is remotely hi-jacking.
I am curious to know the protocol of how and when the lactation counselors/nurses (sorry I don't know the terminology) come in to counsel new mothers. If a woman decides early on that she does not wish to breast feed, can she request not be visited/counseled at all? Or does it depend on each individual hospital's policy. Just curious.

I just did a research paper on a similar topic this weekend (mine was more on Continuing to breastfeed after you've returned to work, and the challenge that working mothers face with it)... but anyway, i guess i always assumed that Europe was SO much more open about this, yet, most of the articles that i came across in my research were from England, and showed how negative a majority of the attitudes were towards it. i really was surprised.

I think its a class issue. Women who are of a middle/higher class tend to breastfeed, the lower classes tend to formula feed. To be honest, I am not sure why. There is quite a clear breakdown in classes here in Britain, its bold of me to say there is almost a class uniform, it is that clear to whom belongs to what class. Working women have much more incentive to breast feed well upto the childs first birthday as we have much much better maternity leave here, mine was 6 weeks at 90% of my pay, a further 20 weeks at a statuatory pay (which is like$200 a week) then after that you can have additional maternity leave (unpaid) for a further 26 weeks. Starting sometime in the next year, the government is introducing a further 3 months statuatory maternity pay which will take new mothers up to 9 months paid leave. I think that the myth that Europe is so open is really a myth at times (although living in England, its not really considered Europe by the British) We do have fantastic breast feeding facilities at supermarkets, clothing stores, Boots the Chemist, etc...but again, its a class thing!

Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
I wasn't comfortable with breastfeeding, having my boobs out there, how my DH would respond to seeing it. I did get some pushback from his mom who kept insisting that the baby didn't like to breastfeed & that he preferred the bottle
Even though I wasn't comfortable I was willing to give it a shot for selfish reason - to lose weight. In the end, I was glad I did it (and still wish I could pump & lose weight ) I did do it for 11 months & was happy with my choice.

In my hospital, they asked you what you were planning. If you indicated formula, than they left you alone. If you indicated breastfeeding, they gave you the name of the lactation consultant on call at the hospital in case you had any questions.

I personally don't see why anyone would have an issue with BF'ing...it's totally natural and what they were made for. I couldn't see not BF'ing as it is indisputably better for the baby.
Anyway, I think this is a very good point. Studies show that more educated people (and therefore presumably "higher class") have a higher incidence of BF'ing. I thought this was interesting since BF'ing is obviously cheaper. I see this at my firm....nearly every lawyer BFs for at least 6 months whereas most support staff do not.
However, I have my own office so it was no problem to lock my door and pump... a luxury some employees do not have and may not feel comfortable requesting.
I think working mothers face many difficulties in returning to work while BF'ing and I think some of these difficulties could be eradicated by state legislatures to ease some of those burdens. I think employers should be legally mandated to provide employees with a private area to pump. Also, I know NJ was going to add BF'ing mothers as a protected class under its anti-discrimination law but I believe that effort failed. Which, I think is a shame.

Re: Spinoff to Breast Feeding post...
OMG - I TOTALLY would do it wherever and whenever if I could... let people give me dirty looks and stare - whatever
After years of working on my body to fulfill some standard that is almost impossible to fulfill, this is a woman's time to say - know what? It's time I use my body for ME and for feeding my child....
But, like I said, surgery is going to prevent me from doing it....
