Re: Spinoff to calling the police...
Not really.
My mom was very conscious of the neighbors and what they might think. She got mad and she would narrow her eyes and speak in a very deliberate and clipped tone. Almost a growl.
My dad rarely got angry - but when he did he didn't even have to raise his voice to let us know how po'd he was.
There were occasions when I gave into teenaged angst and would yell or cry out or whatever... but dramatics never played well in my house. My dad would laugh and my mom would arch her eyebrow and roll her eyes.
My brother and I got into some loud fights with each other though!
And oddly enough.. I tend to be a yeller. Go figure.

No, never. My parents were very lenient and my sister and I were good kids.
I've been at friend's houses when I was younger and have watched huge blowouts between them and their parents. I remember I always felt so lucky that my parents and I never faught like that.

Re: Spinoff to calling the police...
Yup. We sure did.
And I was always an honor student who never smoke, drank, did drugs or got into any kind of trouble what so ever.
I guess my parents were just trying to be proactive.

Yes. My mom was very quick with her hands and she would totally fly off the handle over the smallest thing. She throws a temper tantrum better than any 2 year old anywhere, and she's a LOT more destructive.
Same here - all behind closed doors though...no one outside of the house knew what she did or was capable of.
I grew up in a similar household...

Re: Spinoff to calling the police...
We had a few fights here and there. Nothing that lasted much more than a few minutes though. We're the type of people to yell and then storm off in anger

Yes! My mom and I are VERY stubborn. So, needless to say, there were more fights than I can ever imagine.
Now, though, we are very close and hardly ever fight. We both respect each other as mothers and adults.

no. we got yelled at. we didn't yet back.
we didn't even flinch back.
how do you "fight" with your parents? they tell you something, you do it (or don't do it) as a child/teen. the whole concept boggles my mind.
"No Sally, you cannot go to Millie's house
but I want to GO!
No, and that's final
you are so unfair! I HATE MY LIFE".. que door slam.
that happened on after school specials...not in my house
ETA: my dad ruled with an IRON hand. we got hit A LOT, punished A LOT (for weeks and months at times). he thought fear was the best way to keep us in line. I don't agree with this practice, either.
It was more that they flew off the handle....I think my parents both have tempers and unfortunately we got yelled at...and my sister and I were not "bad" kids but we were not angels either. I don't think it's funny though that you refer to it as "an after school special" - that was my life.....
I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression, we were not abused...but we did get into a LOT of arguments!

that was the point of after-school specials. they were supposed to tell stories people could relate to.
I couldn't relate to them. b/c I would've gotten the sh1t beat out of me had I attempted to scream at my parents. that is why it's funny to me. b/c that was NOTHING to what went on in my house.
it wasn't making fun of you or your situation. compared to mine, it seems ideal. that is all.

Re: Spinoff to calling the police...
we had one all out fight that I can remember. My father who NEVER raised his voice to me was flipping out my mom who is a "loud" person just by nature was almost too quiet- it was scary- I COMPLETELY DESERVED it!
But generally, no,I just listened to my parents- we argued once in awhile- but nothing so crazy

Re: Spinoff to calling the police...
My mom was a screamer. We did not scream back.
She used the wooden spoon on occasion.
We rarely needed to argue. All they had to do was say they were disappointed in us & that was worse than any punishment.
