Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

Do you think they should allow cell phones in schools??

My feeling is that they should NOT be allowed because they are distracting.

Totally agree!! and while where at it, they should be banned from other places as well.
I see the parents say that what if they need to get in touch with there kids. I went to school and didn't have a cell phone. If my mom needed to reach me, she either called the school or came to the school. We all lived before there was cell phones. Ok I am done!

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

in this day and age- with something bad happening at schools every week- I kind of think they are needed

I would only give my kids the one that calls me, Dad, the police and one other person

but they should be turned off during class

NO!

sidenote (bc i'm assuming you meant HS, but)- most of the people in my classes are in their mid to late 30s. They leave their cell phones on during class, and when it rings, they pick it up, answer it, and walk out of the room Chat Icon

ok, i dont know if its just ME... but i would expect more from them. And, they're very intelligent people.... it really just baffles me that they can show blatent disregard like that Chat Icon

I don't have a problem with them having phones...they should just follow some rules while in school - such as not using it in class or ven between classes. I believe it should be kept for emergency purposes only.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I hate cell phones with the fire of a thousand suns, and as a teacher, I'd be furious if one rang during my class.

In NYC they are banned. If a kid is seen with one, they are taken. I know many of my kids (7th graders) have phones, and they know that if I don't see/hear the phone it's not a problem. I do understand why some parents want their kids to have them since the area is not always safe and many of them use public buses and subways. On the rare occasion that there is a family emergency with a kid, a relative usually comes right to the schoo to pick the kid up.

Unfortunately, my kids are super-well behaved and the fact that they respect my wishes is not the norm- last year especially, the 8th graders thought nothing of walking down the halls talking on their phones.

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

No I dont think kids should have cellphones in school unless it was off and in their pocketbook or bookbag till they got home. If they are going to abuse the phone while learning in class than I think the teacher should take them away from them till class is over and its time to go home.

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

No. Why do kids need to be reached during school hours?? They don't! If parents need to call them, call the school. My parents did that and their parents before them. My school had several bomb scares, 1 actual chlorine bomb went off and we had a fire. No cell phones at that time and no one panicked. The school handled it just fine. I'm sure if there were cell phones it probably would have caused more chaos.

No, they should not be allowed. Im sure when some of us were in school, we didnt use cell phones..we had the lovely pay phones. Why do they need them now?
They really don't.

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

I just think about that girl who was killed a few weeks ago texting her parents "I love U" before she died

we don't live in the same world anymore

things have changed- no one shot people when I went to school-

it's sad but true

I think both sides have valid points. I can see in this day and age though why people do want their child to have it. Most people aren't home like they used to be and need their child to check in at various points in the day, etc.
On the other hand,
I could see kids abusing the privalage during school but as someone else posted if it is out of sight, it could be out of mind. JMO, I don't know?

They make phones for kids that they can use to all parents and 911. I definitely think that in the scary world that we live in today, all kids should have these on them at all times. But that could just be my post 9/11 traumatic stress disorder speaking.

Here is an example

That's the only kind of cell that should be allowed. There is no reason for a kid to have a cell phone in school. Between the camera phones in locker rooms/rest rooms & the ability to text each other during exams, they should be banned.

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

No aboslutely not. You can say they can keep it in their bags or whatever, but once they are allowed at all, they are used - kids are sneaky and will find ways to use them during class.
Yes the world is a scary place, but it was scary before there were cell phones too. When my parents were kids in school they used to have air raid drills because there was such a theat of bombing, and certainly no one had cells then. Cell phones could actually cause more harm than good in a potenial emergency - I am not for it.

Really? You are even against the firefly? I cant imagine why anyone would object to that so I am curious what your reasoning is. They can only use that to call their parents or 911.

ETS: when our parents were growing up, even when we were growing up, no one wore helmets while riding a bike, seat belts were optional.... I think that anything meant to improve the safety of children is a good thing, no? Clearly this is meant to improve safety....

I agree with this. The Firefly product is excellent. It's only meant for one reason and that should be the only reason it's used.

I agree that things are different now and people are more on edge about safety.

I also agree that cell phones (regular ones) and all text messaging devices be banned.

I have mixed feeling on this. If you think back to Columbine, it was fortunate that some of the students had them. However, I dont think they should be allowd to be turned on or used in the school in any way with the exception of emergencies.

I think they should be allowed, but they can't be used during school hours unless it's an emergency; not during classes and not in the hallways.

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

I teach in a high school and every kid has one. We have "rules" about electronics (cell, ipod) and they usually respect them. In todays world our district wouldn't dream of banning them.

My DD is 2 and as soon as she gets to elementary school she will have a cell phone.

Re: Spinoff to cell phones...should they allow them in school????

as a mother of 2, my kids WILL have a cellphone with them at all times. this world is too freaking crazy and god forbid of an emergency, i want to be able to contact my kids and allow them to contact me, or their dad, aunt or anyone for that matter. hey if they are caught talking with it in school, they will suffer the consequeces of detention. but i am looking at the bigger picture. i believe a cellphone is important. jmo.
