Spinoff to dishwasher: Why DON'T you wash pots and pans in dishwasher?

Just wondering why people don't wash everything in the dishwasher? I don't think there's anything we don't put in there (unless it specifically says not dishwasher safe, but then we don't use it very often). All pots and pans go in ours. Non-stick, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.

For me, only b/c they take up too much room and I'd rather put everything else in there.

Plus sometimes, the pots have to soak and I end up washing them by hand. Otherwise, if I put them in, I'd have to re-wash them again anyway.

I do wash pots and pans in the dishwasher - assuming they are dishwasher safe.

With only two of us, the dishwasher would take too long to fill up otherwise.

We have a good set of non-stick pans and they clean up so easy by hand. The manual recommends hand-washing so I'm not taking any chances of shortening their life span or voiding the warranty by putting them in the dishwasher.

ETA: We hand wash our knives too.

lol i'm not sure why i don't! i guess its because they take up so much room, and i'd rather save the room in the dishwasher for the smaller stuff.
i also find that i use the same couple pots every night... since i don't need/want to run teh dishwasher every night, its easier to just wash the pots by hand and have them ready for the next meal, then put them in the dishwasher and wait until i have a full load to wash them.

We use the pots more frequently than we run the dishwasher so we usually just wash them by hand!

I put it all in, except when it says not dishwasher safe.

I also try and not put the copper bottom pans in their because they tarnish.

I put EVERYTHING in the dishwasher. Even non dishwasher safe stuff. I just put that on the top rack and no problems.

I find that after a while the pots start to look funny from the diswasher. Plus they just take up so much room. In our new house, we don't have a dishwasher, so now I don't have that problem.

I usually do unless they need a good soaking or the dishwasher is full.

1. We need the pots and pans clean more often than we fill/run the dishwasher - some pots I use almost every day.

2. Our cookware is "hand wash recommended."

3. DH likes to use a special soap that supposed to be better for the stainless steel, not regular dish soap.

I wash pots in my dishwasher except the non-stick ones. I was putting them in there, but I found that the non-stick wasn't as working as well so now I just clean them in the sink.

My cast iron has been seasoned forever (literally - they belonged to my dad when he was single). You don't soap a seasoned cast iron pot or pan.

The others are just easier to clean by hand.

i put my regular pots and pans in the dishwasher but never my non-stick. i was told not to by my uncle who is a chef--he said it ruins it. don't know how or why though

our pots & pans are not dishwasher safe - same w/our knives, so both get hand washed. Everything else - dishwasher it is!

The dishwasher beats the heck out of the handles on the pots. DH has some he put in the dishwasher before we were married and they look about 20 years older than mine, which never went in the dishwasher.

Also, I think the dishwasher or the detergent will cause the nonstick coating on pans to gradually come off.

We hand wash all of our pots and pans. I read once that it ruins the non-stick coating on pans. Not sure if it was from the detergent or the steam cycle that comes with the drying.

Just as an FYI, you shouldn't put your good knives in the dishwasher either.
