does your spirituality influence if you believe "everything happens for a reason" ??

I don't believe things happen for a reason other then the obvious. I believe in God but I am not very religious so I checked spiritual but it doesn't effect my opinion here.
To me, trying to assign a higher meaning to everything that happened is like reading your horoscope the day after and saying it was correct. For example...if I went to a different HS, I wouldn't have met my friend Joanna but I am sure I would have made another life long friend. I would be none the wiser and just as happy with my friend.
