spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
Those who go to subway - why do you choose subway over a regular deli? I have always thought subway was a rip off. They put two slices of meat thats been sitting out for who knows who long in a sandwich and charge you as much as a deli would for a big, fresh sandwich. I can understand in non-NY places where there isn't a deli every 1/4 of a mile, but I just don't get it.
I also don't get why people go to pizza hut/domino's when there are a million pizza places everywhere.

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway
I was JUST thinking about it actually! There is a subway right by my office along with 3 or 4 delis and I always see a few people with the subway bags during lunch and always wonder why... They give you NO meat and charge the same as if it was a great big fresh sandwich from a deli rigth next door...

I could never understand why we have dominos and pizza hut in the tri state area.

I fall into your "non-NY places" category. It's awful. There are no delis in my town.
But a real pizza place just opened recently and we love it so much, we go there nearly once a week now! The owners are from Rhode Island

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
I usually pick Subway as a quick alternative to fast food. It's not so much that I prefer Subway to a regular deli, it just happens to be more convenient and/or cheaper than a regular deli. I also like all the "fixings" at Subway, in fact, I often just get the veggie sandwich with no meat.

If I want a sandwhich I go to Subway because I can go online and find the nutrition info.

I don't like Subway for the reasons you've mentioned. I haven't gone to Pizza hut since High School. Pizza Hut was in walking distance. Once I was out of HS, I don't remember ever going back to one. We will be going soon, though. DS's pre-K is having some sort of reward program, where if they read a certain number of books, or certain time, they get PH certificates. How can I tell DS that he can't use his reward?

I totally agree. But if I wanted a REAL italian hero....I'd go to a deli!

I like this too.
I also like the fixins and for me, its significantly cheaper than the other delis around me where I would pay $6.25 for a turkey or tuna sandwhich, as opposed to subways $4.32.

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
I grew up on LI but now live in CT. It's so hard to find a deli around here it's amazing. Sometimes I crave a deli sandwich, I have to make it myself. And a roll from stop and shop just isn't the same as a roll from the deli!!
There is something about pickles and subway mayo that I like though...

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
Never in my life had Subway, kind of for that reason. Dh says it's "healthier" I have no desire to try it.
As for Pizza Hut- when I was younger I liked their personal pan pizzas in the cute little pans. I still LOVE and crave their breadsticks, but haven't had them in a long time. A lot of the pizza huts seem to have closed around here.

I usually only get the veggie sandwich from Subway if I go there. If I want a sandwich with meat, I go to a deli.
As for pizza - I only ate chain pizza when I was in college and had no other option (although I do love pizza hut's bread sticks).

Subway pickles taste better than the regular deli pickles.

I hate subway and never go there.
As for pizza hut and dominos- sometimes I'm just in the mood for that kind of pizza- it's a totally different thing than "regular" pizza.
I don't even consider it pizza If I want pizza I say "lets get pizza" if I want the other, I say "lets get pizza hut/dominoes!"

I miss Deli's
Publix makes really good hero's and once in a while I'll go to Publix to get a nice sandwich. But if I am really pressed for tim and can't make it to Publix then I'll grab Subway

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
In my mind- subway is totally different than a deli- satisfies a different craving. I love all the veggie toppings- delis don't have that. But eww I never get a cold cut sandwhich there- it's always either chicken or veggie burger or something.
Pizza hut is not pizza- but it's still yummy sometimes.
Oh and plus, most delis close early- subway is open for dinner.

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
I feel the same exact way!
You will never catch me in a subway! I think the meats are fake and disgusting. Id much rather go to a deli and get boarshead meat on a good piece of italian bread. I dont even like the combos at subway..it makes me sick!
As far as pizza hut..we only went there when we went as a family or when we are on vacation. Its nice to sit down and order and eat family style. They also have pitchers of beer there so thats a plus. As far as ordering from home or a quick meal when out, eww! I would much rather have a real slice of ny pizza ANY DAY.
But I have a lot of friends all over the states who dont have these things available to them. Even when my dh lived in Pa..I couldnt get over how very little delis there were in the area. They also dont have ny water for the pizza so in a way if I am away, I will opt for the fake stuff!

OMGosh...Publix...I CANNOT wait..I'll be down in 3 weeks. Will def. be getting sandwiches from there and hitting the beach
I am a Subway fan. I prefer Subway over fast food. I like the fixins and I like Fridays during lent, DH brings home the Veggie Delights for dinner. IMO I think Subway is a little cheaper then the deli as well.

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
i love delis, but i can't justify $7.00 for JUST the sandwich... most deli's by the time you walk out you've spent $10.00
Subway you get sandwich, drink and a side for $5.00 or less

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
We have sandwich shops here (non-US) which make amazing sandwiches, but they are only near my work. So on the weekends I will get Subway sometimes b/c it is right next door to my flat. I will get a veggie sandwich.
As for pizza I won't go to Pizza Hut. There are a few pizza shops here, but it isn't NY pizza. It isn't bad, just different.

I agree with this. They are very different, and my cravings for each are totally separate.
And as good as pizza on Long Island is, its just not the same as pizza from Brooklyn in my opinion. Close, but not the same!

Re: spinoff to fast food - Subway/pizza
I think I had a sandwich once each from subway & blimpies. I just prefer sandwiches from a regular deli with boar's head cold cuts.
I do like Pizza Hut though to me it's not that much different then going to McDonald's for a burger when a diner or bar is next door that serves great burgers. I don't think I ever had Dominos and I tried Papa John's once and it was awful.
