We have an alarm that is always armed at night. All the windows and doors are always locked. Yet I am still nervous that someone would still break in. What if they smashed the sliding glass doors or kick in the front door and are not bothered by the alarm? DH says I am crazy Chat Icon

eta - i wonder how these home invadors are getting in? Are people leaving windows unlocked overnight?

I do feel safer. Like I said in the other thread with the alarm I can sleep at night.

Our sliding glass door has a glass break on it. So if the glass broke the alarm goes off. If someone kicked in the door it would set the alarm off.

We have a glass break detector in every room, just in case.

We tested it with a lightbulb and it does work! Chat Icon

I have a few motion detectorsin my house, so even if they didn't come through the alarmed door, once in my home, they would trip the alarm.

We've had the alarm for 10 years. I don't think I could ever sleep without it.

thanks for posting this. I just called Slomins, they do offer this. The audible detector is $200 one time fee.

Or we can have a detector put on every window and the sliding glass doors for $125 each window/door!

Now if I can only convince DH to spend the $200.....

Yes and yes. We have a break glass sensor on both sliding doors. I always wanted an alarm when I was a kid, I love having one know. It gives me security. I also never leave windows open when I am not home, I think a lot of people do that. We don't even leave windows open overnight in our bedroom. You never know.

From what I read about the recent ones in Melville I think- both times they entered through unlocked doors! Chat Icon
It amazes me that people STILL continue to go to bed or leave the house without LOCKING THEIR DOORS!
I could never sleep like that. This isn't 1950's Mayberry!

Re: Spinoff to Home Invasion - Do you have an alarm system and does that truly make you feel safer?

We do not have an alarm system. I've heard the same thing that most home invasions occur when burgulars check houses for unlocked doors. It's the easiest so they just go up to houses until they find one unlocked. We are pretty diligent about keeping our doors locked all the time. Except for the screen door in the back up the deck. We probably should though.

Re: Spinoff to Home Invasion - Do you have an alarm system and does that truly make you feel safer?

Hi! I figured I would give you the "Cop" point of view. Unfortunately I have too much experience responding to Home Invasions and Burglaries. Unfortunately Burglars are getting a little bit more brazen and breaking into homes at night with people home, hence turning into a home invasion. There are many ways to keep your home and family safe.

- ALWAYS LOCK YOUR DOORS!!!! This means during the Day and Night!!!! If your home during the day and it's sunny and beautiful just lock the screen door! Every little bit helps! (I always lock DH in the garage!!! oops!) Burglars don't want to make noise. they want to get in and out quick without bringing attention to themselves. So locking doors prevent it from being "easy" for them... And if you like leaving windows open when you leave your home such as for your pets, leave them open to the locks. It will be open enough for air but prevent someone from coming in. If you don't have locks, drill in screws to "make " your own lock...

- Don't Stick To A Schedule Indefinitely...
Change it up a bit! I understand people with families have a "Routine". But unfortunately your routine is a burglars "Opportunity"!!! They know when you come and go and for how long.

- LEAVE YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK!
Don't leave large sums of money around the house unless you have a LARGE safe to put it in. A safe that is Too heavy to carry out of your home. Also... If you go to the bank and make large transactions, be aware of your surroundings. Put your money away before you leave the bank.

- CLOSE YOUR BLINDS, CURTAINS etc....
Don't let everyone see your precious belongings. Such as your Flat screen TV, Lap top, etc... Or Your PETS!! That's my precious belonging!!! When your not home, you don't need to show the neighbors what you have. Because it's NOT just those nosey neighbors that are looking...

- CRUSH YOUR BIG PURCHASE BOXES!!!!!
For all those Holidays were people love to give wonderful gifts, don't let everyone know what you have. Crush the boxes... Or don't put them out to the curb until garbage day.

** I hope I'm not scaring anyone.. I'm trying to make you aware of what perpetrators look for to commit a crime. Don't give them the opportunity that they are looking for. Make it hard for them. They don't want to make noise. Noise brings attention to them and they can't get their job done. Don't be afraid to call the Police when you see someone suspicious in your neighborhood. If you see someone looking into house windows or checking door handles on houses or cars, CALL THE POLICE!! That is their job to investigate the person. If nothing is wrong that's fine!! It's ok. AND you can call ANONYMOUSLY!!!!**

If anyone ever has any questions feel free to ask!

Thanks for posting this, Gina. It seems like common sense to me but it is good to hear it again.

I never leave doors unlocked, whether I am home or not. Windows are shut and locked when we're not home. I don't want to take any chances.

I sleep much better at night having an alarm system. We never leave doors or windows unlocked, even when we're home. I won't even answer the door if I'm home with DS and don't know who it is. You just never know what could happen and it's not worth the chance.

Not to rain on alarm parades (because I do think they are wonderful and a smart investment), my in-laws have an alarm system on their house. They were out one day when it went off (not sure how it was tripped). In any case, a neighbor said the response time by police was over 35 minutes!!!!

35 minutes?!

They pay a ton for an alarm and I was appauled by the response time.

(And I'm not trying to blame cops at all! It could very well be the alarm company's fault relaying the message, or whatever. In any case 35 minutes is too too long.)

My father owns his own Alarm Company so i have always had an alarmed house! And YES it does make me feel safer- especially when I was living alone! My father installed 2 keypads- one in bedroom, and one at my front door as well as a panic button next to my bed (and of course every window and door has a glass break sensor, and there are motion detectors throughout)- it puts me at ease and i don't think I could ever live somewhere without one! And it is always on when I am home alone- day or night!

yeah, article states they are coming in thru unlocked doors and windows. I agree, I can't imagine how anyone nowadays can leave doors and windows unlocked when sleeping or not home. My neighbors went away, left their whole house vacant (with their cat inside) and left EVERY SINGLE WINDOW wide open. It blew my mind. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Home Invasion - Do you have an alarm system and does that truly make you feel safer?

We got an alarm system when we first bought our home..it made me feel better...until the first time it went off (by accident) and it took Suffolk County PD 40 minutes to respond. I wasn't home when it happened and Slomin's couldn't get in touch with me on my cell, so the SCPD were called. My neighbor came over when he heard the alarm and waited for the police to come (he has a key to my house).

This happened a second time and it took them 45 minutes to come, DH was home this time and couldn't remember the passwork for slomins so they send the police.

As soon as my alarm contract was up, i cancelled it. It's a moot point when the police don't respond promptly.

Besides, I have a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler. And the GS is not friendly with strangers at the door or on the property.

Re: Spinoff to Home Invasion - Do you have an alarm system and does that truly make you feel safer?

Great tips, Gina!

After my dad was gone I really wanted to get an alarm system. I always felt safer with him in the house, and at first it was hard to get used to. Ultimately we could not afford it, and I'm totally used to not having the 6'4 260lbs enforcer nor and alarm, and i feel pretty safe, but I do think I would feel safer with an alarm.

I think this is a big one. I am always driving around and seeing huge TV boxes especially. I know several people (a new box was out this morning around the corner) who have brand-new flat-screen TVs. Why advertise? Break apart the box, and put it out in pieces, preferably with the labels not showing. Doesn't take that much effort.
