I feel so bad :( the delays in our home closing have cost dh the car he wanted
We are buying a new car in addition to a house (our current car does not do snow). After a lot of searching and deciding based on price and such, dh found a car he could actually see himself in.
it's a Subaru Forester, but the 2008 2.5 Sport STI edition. VERY VERY rare.
we found one at a dealership in Rockland county and went to check it out. it was really cool...but it was also more than we were initially going to spend
AND
I've been reading about how BAD it would be to buy a car before closing on a house for many reasons.
I basically told my husband we'd have to wait until the house was PURCHASED and we closed. that was at least 2 weeks ago. we've been waiting and waiting for these stupid papers from the SLOWEST DAMNED TOWN ever and the salesman at the dealership just emailed my husband to say his car was sold.
and it's my fault, b/c I told him no, we should wait.
I HATE not being able to give him what he wants. I don' t know what to do now.

I can see why you feel bad, BUT I would rather have the house then the car. Espcially since you will have a few months until the snow comes. He will understand.

Re: I feel so bad :( the delays in our home closing have cost dh the car he wanted
That really stinks! He'll get his STI one day. My DH feels your DH's pain!
My DH had to sell his 2005 WRX STI when we bought our house b/c the expense was too much. It was so sad, he watched it drive all the way down the block with a tear in his eye. I felt so bad.
We actually just bought the Forester STI- you're right, it is a super rare car. We had to buy ours out of state. DH is over the moon b/c he has his STI back, but I'm still getting used to it. I'm scared of the turbo!

Ours was from Jersey, but shipped to Star Subaru in Queens b/c DH knows the floor manager. They actually had two, sold one in June and ours in August. DH found it on eBay. You should try eBay or the Subaru forums-
longislandsubaruclub.com
nasioc.com (DH says this one's thebest)
subaruforester.org
(I hope you find one!!)

Re: I feel so bad :( the delays in our home closing have cost dh the car he wanted
you were definitely right, it was not wise to buy a car before closing on your house. However, I would call back that dealer and have him do a dealer locate - through their data bases, if there is another car out there, they can find out where it is and see if it's possible to swap it in. It's done all the time. Good Luck!

I asked them..they said they can't do it on Cert Pre Owned, and there are no "new" cars of this particular model.
I am looking into some of faithann's links. I hope I can find something.

you could have put a deposit on it and held it until you closed.
Sorry it worked out that way. That car is out there. I know they said it was rare, but they made more than one of them and surely you can find another.

That's not the car.
They're difficult to find - there really are very few around. It's a car that they only sell in limited qualities in Japan, so any ones that are here have been converted. That's why you can't find one by searching the databases. She'll have luck on the forums I suggested.

I offered to do that, but they would only have held the car for 3 days.
it's been about 2 weeks already.
thanks everyone. we'll see what happens.

Just get the car on ebay.
I am sure there are many out of state dealers on there. You may also get a better deal as well.

Aww....We bought my car 3 days before we closed on our house..... Not sure why it would cause a problem as long as the bank knows about it....
Try calling some other dealerships and see if they can find another one. Or try calling SUbaru directly.....

You never want to tell the bank you are buying a car before you close. That could cost you your house.
A bank qualifies you for your morgage based on current DTI ratios. If you add a car to your credit report that skews these numbers.
I am sure there is fine print in your committment letter or loan documents that state a committment may be taken away if your credit profile changes.

It is smart to wait. Once you get into the house, you will be amazed how quickly you can go through money. Plus you might discover problems that the inspection missed that need to be fixed. Better safe than sorry!

It wasn't even in the "fine print" with Chase. it said it right on the commitment letter.
and since we ended up having to pay more out of pocket since the house didn't appraise, it WAS the right decision...I am just sad that they couldn't hold on to the car a while longer.
I will try ebay.
Thanks all!

Re: I feel so bad :( the delays in our home closing have cost dh the car he wanted
If a dealer wants your business so bad, they can get the car from another dealer (even if the car is out of state).
Talk to a different dealer and see what they say. You can even talk to the dealer now. It's ok to put a small cash deposit down on the car if they can locate it. Just don't take delivery until you close.
