spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
will they be coming over your house or will you be bringing DC over to your family members house? Is everyone staying home with DC for the first 3 months also???
I'm having a dilemna with this, my mom lives (5 minutes away driving/20 minute walk from me) BUT she doesnt drive.... So Im just trying to think how its going to work, will I be bringing DD to her or will she be coming here? I know it would be more convenient for me to bring DD to her but then I need to get everything double..... what are you ladies doing / thinking about all of this???

I will be dropping her off everyday once I go back to work and DH will pick her up at least 3 times a week to give me a break.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My mom will be watching at her house every day till noon. Back when she offered up this arrangement we began looking for cheaper, or on sale versions of the baby gear that I'm keeping at my house. She has doubles of pretty much everything that the baby will need for day to day stuff. We got alot of it from places like Walmart, Target and Sears, when they ran sales alot of the stuff was really cheap.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My mom is watching 3 days a week (I will be working from home the other 2 days). I will be returning to the office after 4 mos. She'll be watching him in her house. We mostly got doubles of everything, but after buying her a crib I think we are going to return it because it's so big, and I don't want his stuff taking over her condo.
She lives 5 mins away from me; between my house and my work.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
she lives with us so she will be watching the baby in our house.
but we have 2 homes, so we are also in the double dilemma.
maybe get a 3 in one bassinet type system for your moms house, so she has a bassinet and a playard.
even buying in double now is nothing compared to what we are saving!!!
god bless our moms (in law) and other family members
ETA: I am returning to work after 6 or so weeks.

My mother lives a few towns over and doesn't drive so I will be dropping DC off in the morning and DH will be picking the baby up after work. I will be home or the first 3 months as well, hoping for 4!

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My parents will live about 1 mile away (assuming we actually close on our new house!) about a 5 minute drive and we will be dropping off the baby every morning (I'm only off from work for 6 weeks).
We will have double of many things just to make things easier. I figure my mom will be more comfortable in her house and will be able to do the things she needs to get done.
It won't be easy but it's what works best. I have no choice but to go back to work after 6 weeks, it's my internship/residency year.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
We’re very lucky – we live 5 min. from my parents & I work in their town, so I’ll be bringing him to their house 3 days a week (I'll be going back sometime between 10 & 12 weeks).
As for the things you’d need to keep there – I recommend getting everything second-hand and/or borrowing everything that you can get your hands on!! I was worried about it too, but once I started telling people that we’d be bringing him there they started offering up LOTS of stuff! My one cousin gave my mom a high chair. My other cuz is loaning us her SnugRider snap-in stroller frame so that my mom can use our infant seat in that & she’s loaning us her 2nd car seat base so that we can keep one in my mom’s car. My dh’s cousin just gave us a great second-hand swing and a beautiful, used Graco stroller that we’ll be leaving there. So far the only thing I plan on giving them & leaving there is a new pack ‘n play. They have a plain one from my cuz that I’ll use at our home & I’ll give them my new one with the bassinet & changing table built in. After that I think that we’ll just need to worry about toys & diapers! Seriously – start spreading the word! You’ll be surprised how very generous the people in your life can be!!

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
The day my MIL watches the baby, she will be at our house. She likes the baby to be in his own environment. When DS goes to my friends mom's, I will drop him off.
We do not plan on keeping our baby home for 3 months. Since he will be a summer/fall baby, we plan to be out & about rather quickly

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My mother is watching my baby when I go back to work after 12 weeks.
Right now we live with her, so obviously, there will be no travelling.
However, one day down the line when we move, I will bring the baby to her.
She has a lot of baby items already, including a crib since this is her 7th grandchild. But whatever she didn't have, I'd buy it for her.
Whatever makes my mom's life easier while she watches my child so I can go to work, she can have. Not that she'd ask, but I'd insist.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My parents are coming to our house to watch one day a week. The other 4 he will be in day care. They live about 15 minutes away. Financially it really only saves us about $100 a month but they really want to and I think it's good for them to build a relationship with their grandson. Worst case senario with my job I will be back to work at 6 weeks. Best case they will let me work from home for a while but the way things are going lately I'm not counting on it.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My mom wil be watcing our baby when I go back to work. But most likely I am going back part time so it should be for 2-3 per week.
My mom already ordered a crib to have at her house and I got a few doubles from my shower that I didnt bother returning and instead just gave to her.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
We take DS to my ILs 3 days a week and they live less than 10 min away. They had a PNP that they purchased when he was younger, but now he naps on the bed in the guest room. I used to bring stuff to leave at their place but they soon started to buy their own diapers, wipes, blankets, and food.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
I went back to work FT when DS was 3 months old and my ILs watched DS full time for me ( I then went PT when DS was 6 months - and ILs still watched him)
Anyhow, they picked him up at my house in the Am but they watched him at their home. They already had a walker, exersaucer and infant toddler rocker from previous grandchildren.
For DS they bought a portable swing. They do have a PNP but DS naps on a full size bed pushed against the wall there (once he hot mobile they put a bed rail on the open side and MIL puts pillows and stuff along the floor just incase he falls.
I left a supply of clothes there and a box of diapers and they buy wipes from Costco. I also bought a pkg of extra bottles, liners and a few of the individual 8oz RTF cans of formula just in case they needed it. But each AM they would get DS and I would pack his diaper bag with clothes, bibs and 2 diapers (in case they took him somewhere) and they took his bottles which we made for the day!
ETA: we also bought them a full size car seat once DS was out of the infant seat (my SIL had given them her old car seat base for the infant seat) and my SIL gave them her highchair once her DD was done with it.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
I am going to try to go back to work asap since I dont get paid maternity leave im thinking after 6- 8 weeks
Once I go back I will be dropping the baby off at my mom's each morning I am going to see if my aunt has an extra car seat and stroller to leavea t my moms instead of taking it in/out every day, if not I will register for an extra car seat but probably not an extra stroller

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
my mom comes to me every morning--she lives 2 minutes away. it's more convenient for her because my house has everything DS needs.
she has a britax carseat and takes him all over during the day, including her house.

If your Mom is only a 5 minute drive - maybe if would be "easier" to go pick her up and bring her back to your house??? I know that would require packing baby in the car for the trip - but it may be "easier" than buying double of everything....
As for us - my Mom will be watching the baby a day or two a week - they live 40 minutes away - and she does drive parkways - so I will be bringing baby to her.... possiblly even the night before .... if I can part with the little one,
I also plan on staying home the first 3 months....

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
My parents will be watching 3 days a week. I'll be going back part time after about 8 weeks. I'm not registering for anything extra. My mother will buy a playard, so it will be a bassinet/changing table/play pen for when the baby is older. I'll bring the bouncer everytime and I guess the carrier with the snap & go. I'll buy some extra stuff for my mom if its on sale or at a yardsale or something but I'm not having other people buy extra on my registry, I feel thats my responsiblilty. I would feel bad having extra on my registry when we are able to buy inexpensive items ourselves. But yes, I will be driving my to my parents, its on my way to work anyway.

Re: spinoff to: if you have a family member watching your baby.....
I just got back from my neighbor's garage sale & thought of you! I've never shopped one before, but my dh drove by & saw tons of baby stuff so I dropped in & I got...
- an Exersaucer - a Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies & Lights Deluxe Playmat/Gym - a Fisher-Price Aquarium Take Along Swing - a Baby Einstein Baby da Vinci DVD - a Baby Einstein Baby Neptune DVD
Everything is in mint condition & I got it all for $50!! Not too shabby for stuff that will be staying at my mom's house Now that the weather is getting nice, I'd definitely check out some garage sales!
