Why would a child need a cellphone???? A 9 year old doesn't really need to be reachable at the drop of hat. First, speaking as a teacher, they aren't even allowed in school. Second, for those that say they want to be able to reach their children when they are out my response is.............shouldn't you know where your 7,8,9,10 year old is at all times anyway? Why would you need to track them down with a cell?
I don't think times are as different as everyone makes them out to be. Yes, we didn't have cell phones when I was a kid and yet somehow my mom always knew where I was and we all survived. Why should it be any different now? What would really warrant the need for a child to have a cell? And people wonder why children grow up too fast these days. My DD will not have a cell phone until she's in high school and would have more of a reason to possibly need one.
I agree with you...maybe I am naive but, if I am dropping my child off at some ones house I expect them to be there and not run off some where else( for ex.: my brother (13) will tell my mom he is going to Danny's house, go there after school and they the 2 of them meet other friends on Main St. and go skate boarding, this to me is unacceptable and he has been doing this for a few years).

Re: Spinoff to kids growing up fast let talk Cellphones?
I don't think a 9 year old needs a cell phone. But, I know there is a new device out there that only has 5 buttons on it and the phone is prepaid. 4 of the buttons are programmed by the parent (usually mom cell, dad cell, home, grandma's house) and the 5th (in the middle) is 911. I learned about this at a conference I went to for work regarding technology and kids. I thought it was a great tool to keep in a young child's backpack and use only for emergencies. Looks like this:

The gift to get your child from moving up from elementary -5th grade to the middle school- 6th grade is a cell phone.
We will not be following this tend. My DH says when she gets a job to pay the bill then she can get a phone.
I say anywhere from 13 on. If I feel she NEEDS it sooner then we'll see.

Re: Spinoff to kids growing up fast let talk Cellphones?
DD had a "locked" cell phone after we had some problems with the school and it was only able to call me, DH and my mom. after Dh past we got her a "unlocked" phone so that she can always be in touch with me. and now that she likes walking to the stores. I am able to get a text or a call that she got there ok and when she is on the road to go back home. god forbid something happens she is able to get me asap. and not having to wait on a phone. or try to find a pay phone. She is very responsible with it, she takes better care of that then anything else. but at the same time does not abuse it. plus i have been debating on getting rid of my house phone. it barley rings anymore , everyone calls my cell.

Oh thank you so much for this! I am home sick with a sinus infection and you actually made me laugh out loud.
I have no clue when DS will be getting a cell phone. I feel as a parent I am saying "I would never" and then the time comes and let's face it, that 7 month old chubby has me wrapped around his fingers. I am so creating a monster and I know it
