See, this is why I can't use this name I think. Again, I am WEIRD and it would drive me nuts to have it possibly pronounced more than 1 way.
If it makes you feel any better, DD's name is Ryleigh--and here in Charlotte, people call her "RAHleigh", like the city. Drives me up the wall--but I guess it comes with the territory...literally!
I'd be willing to bet that you'll get a lot of "Claaaara", as long as you stay in NY forever

Clara (Clah-rah) is how New Yorkers would say it. I think out of state, maybe even upstate, you'd get Clair-a. My cousin Dawn moved out of state and everybody called her Don. It drove her crazy.

I've actually never heard anyone pronounce it Claire-a. I've always heard it Claaara...
That is interesting I have had the opposite experience, I have known a few "Claire-a's" and have never met a "Claaara" but I am Upstate and have found that there are definite differences in pronunciation between Upstate, Downstate, and Long Island.
I agree. I have usually heard it pronounced Claire-a, except by my Irish family who pronounce it CLAAAARA

I ran into this in High School, I had a good friend named Dawn and another friend from D.C. The friend from DC always called her "Don" and I never knew who the heck he was talking about, eventually her nickname became "Donald" because of this ...not sure how much she like that one!

It reminds me of this girl we met on a cruise from the midwest...she spelled her name Kerrie (Kerrr--reee), but said it CARRY. I was like,

Re: Spinoff to my name post: How do YOU pronounce this name?
I lived in the midwest (Indiana) for about 7 years. It altered my NY accent a little bit. Now I say Saire-a (Sara), Caire-a (Cara), Laire-a (Lara) and yes, Claire-a (Clara).
I agree with the POs that it's really a regional thing. I think that most people in NY will say Claaaara.

Re: Spinoff to my name post: How do YOU pronounce this name?
I'd say "short a" Clara. I think the other way is just a matter of accent, and not actual name (if that makes sense). Kind of like I say orange with a short o sound, and some people say it with an "or" sound.
ETA: Short a as in apple. I can't see anyone saying it with a long a (as in ape).
