Spinoff to NYPD officer killed & further conversation..
Last week DH had to arrest a guy, he was a good guy, but had no choice. His drug addict brother was in his parents house, they got in a fist fight and he punched the drug addict in the nose. He went outside and flagged down a police car (DH) and filed charges against his own brother. DH had no choice. Through investigation he found out he was a really good guy, it was a bad situation. The guy being arrested was in shorts and no shoes. DH treated him with respect, got him shoes, appropriate clothing etc. When he got the pct to process, DH asked if he had had breakfast, the guy said no. My DH gave this guy his sandwich that he brought for lunch and bought him a soda.
The guy (who was black) looked at DH (who is white) and said "hey, I never knew cops could be so nice. you really changed my mind about the NYPD."
I think Al Sharpton and the media do a huge injustice to this city. There is a prejudice against the NYPD, whether they are white or black. The prejudice is BLUE.

everyone is so quick to rush to judgment when a police officer is involved in a shooting. I'd like to see anyone else react in that same situation, and then see how they think about it.

Re: Spinoff to NYPD officer killed & further conversation..
its soooo true!!
When my DH worked NYPD his best friend was a black Officer. to this day he is still very friendly with him. My DH is white. I really think that Al Sharpton sadly, loves when this stuff happens to keep his name in the public eye. He is also the largest $hit stirrer I have ever seen!!

There are many, many, many good cops (black, white, polka dotted) on the NYPD and local jobs. It is so sad to me that everything still has to be broken down into some sinister plot by certain media hounds. Kudos to your husband and all the other good cops out there...we need more of them!

Sounds like your DH is a stand up guy.
I definitely think the media has put a prejudice against the NYPD.
Also, in the communities itself, generations are growing up being taught to hate and disrespect the police. Its unreal how much crap my DH and brother and other friends take on a daily basis.
Just ONE of many stories...my brother had to get on a school bus and find out what happened with a fight between students, and when he asked the TEN YEAR OLD GIRL what happened...her response?
"I ai'nt gotta talk to no motherf***ing cop. F**k you pig, you can go f**k yourself for all I care."

I agree 100%. People are so quick to judge and I don't care who you are... you have no idea how you would react until you are in a situation like that.
It's a terrible tragedy what happened and there is always room for improvement, but I don't think Al Sharpton has ever brought any good to any of these situations.

Well Said!!!!
It really sickens me that this was turned into a race issue...
I have been a police officer for 8 years now. And when I came on, it was during 9/11, and everyone got along, and the Police were appreciated.
I remember being in the Academy, and walking to a foot post during 9/11 and we passed an outside cafe, and all of a sudden people one by one began standing and applauding us as we walked by, and Thanked us for protecting them... I couldn't even hold back the tears then,or even now when I tell that story..
It made me proud to put on my Blue uniform everyday and do my job...
I'm still proud to put my uniform on everyday, but it's amazing how the public has done a 360 on us, and it does make my job harder some days... Mr Sharpton especially, doesn't make my job any easier, with the sh!t he stirs...
I love my job even 8 years later, b/c when push comes to shove, no matter what, when you call for help I'm there, and I do the best I can and I know that I treat everyone equally...

Ahh such great things her parents (or guardians) teach her. Because you know that she learned that at home!

Re: Spinoff to NYPD officer killed & further conversation..
honestly, a lot of people have this image of all cops being bad! MY DH works in the subways and a little girl waved to DH and said hello to him, he smiled and waved back the mom screamed at the little girl and rushed her off saying "you don't talk to them, they're bad" it's absolutely ridiculous. DH does say there are a lot of horrible/moronic cops out there though. so i guess they just ruin it for everyone. but yes, al sharpton is the biggest tool there is.

for your DH and all the cops NYPD and other agencies that put their lives on the line every day to protect us. There are wayyyyyyyyyyy more good cops out there than bad cops!!
I sick and tired of people turning everthing into a race issue. We need to support our cops and thank them for what they do everyday!!!

Re: Spinoff to NYPD officer killed & further conversation..
The two stories above about children beign taught that cops are bad makes me sad.
I remember as a little kid always being told to say hello to a police officer & that they were there to help.
It's just like every other job. Some people are great at it, some are mediocre, some are incompetant, and some are just jerks.

DH has had this happen on the street as well, and the language was way more explicit. Hearing things like that is a huge downer for them, especially when it is not true most of the time. Let's just say it doesn't instill the drive to run out and save your life after you just cursed him out. But he does anyway.

You gotta love it...I can't believe some of the stories DH tells me. Some kids are taught by their parents to hate cops before they even know how to tie their shoes

Re: Spinoff to NYPD officer killed & further conversation..
You guys should look into reading/viewing the 60 Minutes episode entitles "Stop Snitiching." It is a brief, but powerful glimpse into how some inner-city kids are raised to feel about police and the people who are trying to change that way of thinking in these communities. I show it to my HS classes when we read certain books with themes about remaining silent in a negative way. Very interesting.
