Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

I have a question..

As a consumer, i'd LOVE to be able to buy wine in the supermarket.
However, i do understand and agree with saving small businesses wherever possible.

I've lived in other states (NJ and MA) where they have both - you can buy wine/beer in supermarkets, and they also have an abundance of liquor stores where you can buy hard liquor, beer and wine as well. They seem to co-exist nicely...

I'm curious what people's opinions are on it.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

I have to say when I movved to NJ last year and saw the A&P had a liquor section, I was in my glory. It was like a one stop shop. It makes it easier when I am hosting a party and cant go to two places. However, I still go to the liquor store also, so they both get my business. I just think its convenient.

here in NC, you can only buy liquor in a liquor store, beer and wine is sold at the super market

I signed it to support local businesses

Where I live (California), you can buy wine and liquor in supermarkets already. I love the convenience. But if I still lived in a place like NY where it was separate, and I knew it'd be bad for local stores if the big supermarkets started carrying it all, I'd probably be against the change. I'm never in favor of small stores being run out of business.

I'm ASSUMING that those states don't have a large group of liquor stores then. On LI we have a TON of them, this would put a lot of them out of business.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

Honestly.. if they had wine/beer in supermarkets I would STILL go to my favorite local shops. I live in the kind of town (Sayville) where I have gotten to know the shopkeeps and where Main Street is still thriving.. I want to see it stay that way. I think my town would be very different and not nearly as nice if all the little shops dried up in the face of monster corporations.

Having said that.. when I lived in a different town that had a less quaint town atmosphere - I would have totally gone with convenience over small shops.

I live in CA too.

I love that when I go to the supermarket, I can pick up some wine, vodka... even cachaca! It makes it super convenient. Here, they even sell wine and hard liquor at CVS!

Where I lived in NY, the liquor store was right next to the supermarket so that was fine with me too!

My feeling is the grocery store clerk isn't going to have good wine suggestions over a guy that's sole focus is selling it.

I read an article awhile back that compared how much of each dollar went to the local economy when you buy from a chain store versus a locally owned store. It was a huge difference. I'm putting my best efforts into keeping my money in our local economy.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

But it isn't just about local businesses being lost

If wine is sold in grocery stores, teenagers will have greater access to the illegal purchase of alcohol — resulting in a heightened risk of underage drinking and fatal drunk driving accidents.

The proposal would also allow wine to be sold wherever beer is sold, meaning every gas station, mini-mart, corner deli, bodegas -- dramatically increasing access to alcohol for teens

This doesn't make much sense to me? If they are already selling beer, how does this heighten the chances that teenagers will be involved in illegal alcohol purchasing and consumption? Now they can get two different types of alcohol products? Not to mention there aren't a ton of teens craving merlot for a quick buzz on a Friday night.

To answer the original post....if it's cheaper and easier, I would buy at the supermarket.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

Yea I agree completely- I signed the petition because I am for small businesses and think that they are the cornerstone of this country- but I dont see how it being in a supermarket would put liquor stores out of business

Frankly, I would still go to the liquor store- mostly because the people there always give me amazing wine suggestions and I dont know that you will get that from a supermarket

I support local businesses, but have to say I would LOVE to be able to pick up some Two Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's! It is as good as expensive wine- we pick it up if we are oos and love it!

Even in states that sell wine in the grocery store, there are plenty of specialty wine shops that stay in business. They offer expert advice, classes, tastings, etc -- things a grocery store doesn't provide. So they definitely can coexist.

I used to live in a state that sold liquor in the grocery store. It was great for picking up a bottle of standard stuff -- but for a GREAT bottle of wine, scotch or whatever for a special occasion or gift, I always went to a liquor store. The selection was better and the people knew their stuff.

I really doubt many teenagers will go for liquor over beer.

I do think they do need to put limitations on where the wine would be sold, because it's not the grocery stores where the law can be violated that much - it's the smaller gas stations, minimarts, and bodegas that get caught selling illegally.

I agree - i would still do both. Supermarket for convenience.. but small biz store for the service. I for one hope this passes so we can have the best of both worlds!

ETA: All hard liquor is sold in ABC stores down there. These are run by the state, so no local businesses can sell hard liquor.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

I would love to get "regular" everyday wine at the Grocery Store and get more "expensive" wine at a specialized store.

As far as the fact that underage drinking would happen. Yes, they sell beer at the grocery stores already. I think teenagers are more into beer and hard liquor than wine. What would the difference be anyway? Someone over 21 could still buy the wine or beer and give it to someone younger. Isn't it how most people get to drink underage already?

I think allowing wine in both supermarket and liquor stores would satisfy everyone.

I'm so torn by this. If it were my family business of course I would want to keep it around, but on the other hand I would love to be able to do one stop shopping too! So walking in their shoes, no it should not be allowed. Its going to put almost all of them out of business, if not all.

But when I need help buying wine, its nice to run into a place and get that help. In the grocery store, I would not get that kind of help.

When we were in FL it was so easy to go to the grocery store and get everything at once though.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets

In the state I live in you can buy that in the food store but there are literally like No liquor stores. In md no alcohol is in the foodstores. We had beer/wine stores and there would be 2 different kinds one that had refridgerated liquor and one where it wasn't. I didn't get why.

true but there are still big name chains for all your pharmacy needs, your not limited to buying them in the grocery store

And the big chains do almost exactly what the small family owned ones did. I think they are the reason they went under, not because of any law
