Just look at it this way.....
Where did all the independant pharmacies go?
true but there are still big name chains for all your pharmacy needs, your not limited to buying them in the grocery store
And the big chains do almost exactly what the small family owned ones did. I think they are the reason they went under, not because of any law
Oh you are 100% correct....
My point was more that once the big chain pharmacies moved in it ended all the mom and pop shops....
Sadly that is what the outcome will be once they start selling liquor and wine in supermarkets...
It just is what it is...small shops will never be able to buy the quantity of inventory that the large supermarkets are able to buy and store...so the small shops will never be able to compete pricewise. It has a lot to do with how liquor is bought by the liquor stores. The more they buy the cheaper cost or the more "free" cases they get...etc...
Small stores just will never be able to compete...

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets
frankly, I wouldn't buy wine from a supermarket.... I am very loyal to my local wine shop... the owner is a genius... very educated, and always helps me find the pefect wine at the perfect price.
no supermarket would have a big selection of quality wines.... just like beers (fairway being the one beer exception)

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets
I am in NC. I always buy wine from supermarket.
But, on Friday nights, they serve wine and cheese with different wine reps set up.
Its a fun night. It makes friday night shopping enjoyable.
I find it to be a complete PITA that they don't sell hard liquor at supermarket! I take serious issues with the fact that liquor stores aren't open here on Sundays! I was making upside down cake on a sunday for company. All out of rum. Go to liquor store, freaking closed.
So, my cake was rumless.
I guess now I totally take it for granted that wine is sold in supermarket...PA was a huge PITA! They don't sell beer anywhere but distributors. What kind of a gas station doesn't sell beer????????

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets
I'm in Chicago and can buy alcohol at grocery stores, CVS/Walgreens and liquor stores 7 day/week. I admit I do like the convenience of being able to purchase alcohol at a bunch of places. I will usually only buy a bottle of wine or a 6 pack of Corona at the grocery store, if I am short on time. I'll go to a local liquor store for hard liquor and certain wines, it tends to be cheaper.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets
To be honest I would love the convience, but I am for supporting small businesses as well, so I would stick to the liquor store

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets
I have l lived in many different states - among them, FL, VA and MI. All of which sold wine in supermarkets. Despite this there was always an abundance of liquor stores and wine stores that offered more of a selection and better service. Generally, the supermarkets would carry more well known brands like Mondavi, Yellow tail etc. but if you were looking for a specific varietal or say a good Oregon Pinot Noir then you would go to the wine store.
I liked the convenience of being able to pick up a bottle at the grocery store especially if I was using it to cook with.
Also, in FL and VA they only sold beer and wine in supermarkets so you still have to go to liquor stores for hard alcohol.

I think they should stay where they are. Most of the time there is a liquor store right next to if not across the street from where the supermarket is so its no biggie.

Re: Spinoff to Petition post - wine in supermarkets
I only support this if they sell hard alcohol as well. Why just wine? (Why just beer either?)
I moved here from CA, where you can get all types of alcohol at the grocery store. It is so convenient. When I moved here I was shocked that they didn't sell anything but beer in the supermarket.
I don't buy the liquor stores going out of business theory - I'm sure some will but where I lvied in CA, there were 4 supermarkets and 2 liquor stores w/i, IDK, a 5 mile radius? Usually I did go to the grocery store but I also occasionally bought at the liqour store. They both had competing prices.
I support this on the whole but wish it was expanded to all alcohol.
