how many feet of property from the curb does the town own?

It depends on the town. I'm in the Town of Huntington and they own 5' from the asphalt. That means the 5' strip of grass that DH mows every weekend at the curb belongs on the town. And the trees that grow on that land belongs to and is maintained by the town. This information should be on your survey that came with the house when you bought it.
