Power lines question, please give me your thoughts, EDITED with pics
Ok, we went today for our inspection, and we just realized there are power lines running through the backyard. Dont know why we didnt realize that when we first saw the house, but we didnt....
Now, the lines are residential lines, and seem to run through the backyards of most houses in the town. They are not like those big towers or anything.
Do you think we should be concerned about this? DH and I love the house, but now we are unsure if this should turn us away. I hear people frequently saying they would not buy a home with power lines in the back, do you mean the towers? or just power lines in general.
ETA: the lines are running across the back of the yard over where the fence is. they are not going through the yard
the lines are NOT the towers as pictured below
they are more like these

Re: Power lines question, please give me your thoughts
We loved a house in Bethpage and put in an offer and then really thought about the power lines and opted against it. Just not worth the risk for us. I don't know what you mean by towers...but they were the big thick power lines...not the usual ones you see.

if it's the ones in the second picture, those aren't a big deal. most houses have them in front of the house. those are regular power lines i believe.
if it was the ones in the first picture, i would say no way.

The ones in the 2nd picture are fairly common. Usually in the front yard, but often in the back. Either way, a lot of LI houses have them close to the house. I personally wouldn't worry about them.

Re: Power lines question, please give me your thoughts, EDITED with pics
Growing up, we had a pole in our neighbor's yard but whenever there was a problem, they would use our yard to get to it. That presented a minor issue with strangers coming in and out of the backyard, and our dog.
It's not something I ever really looked at when we were house shopping but now that we live on the side of the street that doesn't have poles, I like it better.

Re: Power lines question, please give me your thoughts, EDITED with pics
the wires in the second pic are typical residential utility wires, most streets have them in front of the houses. Certain areas like levittown put them in the back to create more curb appeal, some areas have them all underground. I would not have any problem with those wires running behind my house, right now I have them in front of my house. The high tension wires are a totally different thing.

After looking around online...I noticed someone mention levittown's high cancer rate (which is where the house we are looking at is located). However, there was not much to back it up., it just mentioned street names and instances of cancer. Can anyone shed more light on this?

there are various cancer clusters all over LI. Try to find out the age of the people affected in Levittown because it would make sense the the original occupants (60+ years ago) had problems. Many areas that were built directly on land that was formerly used for farming have that problem. I have not read anything recently about Levittown being any worse off than other areas of LI as far as cancer risk goes.

does this mean (in your opinion) that the whole farmland statement is no longer an issue?

I would take a pass personally. My nana has a house like that. THere are also restrictions on what you can do in the backyard. For instance if you want a pool you need to make sure there is a certain distance away from these electrical lines.

if it is the ones in the 2nd pic then i would say the are fine. they look like the same type that most homes have in the front of their house. there are just some areas that have them in the back.. i think its for astectic purposes

The ones in the second pic are as close as the ones in my street to me. And they connect from my house to the poll. Very common over here.

Re: Power lines question, please give me your thoughts, EDITED with pics
The ones in the second picture is what we have in our neighborhood but since we are the last house, the pole ends in the far corner of our house. The power lines do not run across our fence, but we do have the power line from the pole (residental) running directly over the corner of our property to the corner of our house. We never thought anything of it.
