spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I am so lost with this.
I am a month shy of 33, yet most people NEVER guess this.
I still shop at Forever 21..Express, XOXO, rampage..the misses section at department stores etc...
I love colorful things..patterned things etc. I LOVE low cut shirts
but am I dressing my "age"? I guess I am trying to figure ou what someone my age is *supposed* to look like....and how far away from that I am.
do you dress your age? do you think you dress older or younger than you are? should you dress the age you LOOK or the age you ARE?
thoughts?

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I think, that if you leave the house feeling great and you think you look great, than that's all that matters.
I truly believe that age is a state of mind... and no where does it say that once you hit the age of 35 (I'm just throwing a random number out there) you must turn in your bright green shirt and super high heels for sweater sets and loafers (not that there is anything wrong with either outfit I described). You wear what you like and what YOU think looks good on your regardless of age... They don't check IDs at Forever 21, Wet Seal and Rampage, right?? Shop On!!!!

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I would never have guessed that you were 33 BTW. you look like you're in your lower 20's. Although 33 is young.
I look younger for my age too. Anytime I go out with my mom and kids, they think the 3 of us are her kids LOL (She's smokin for her age).
I buy what looks good on me and dont shop with age in mind.
I see nothing wrong with someone older rocking the same clothes someone younger wears. What does bother me is seeing someone wearing something that's obviously not their right size. Now that bothers me! lol

ITA!! I hate when people say they can't shop somewhere b/c they are too old. If it looks great on and you like it..who cares!!!! You only live once

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
It really depends if it looks good on you. Not what age you are.
There were some clothes I could not pull off when I have in my early 20's and I was a size 2.
For example some women look great in mini skirts while others may look "trashy".

I know I dress my age because my style is boring!
I try and get different things, but I always go back to the basics.
I look like a constant Gap ad with a hint of Ann Taylor.

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I wear what I like, but when I saw that sweatsuit I thought of Stacey London and what she would say... "you're about to be 30, and you dress like you're a teenager." I don't care though, I think that sweatsuit is cute.. hence why I'm about to buy it!
I buy what I like, in whatever store it happens to be in... I don't tend to go into stores "geared" towards the "younger" crowd, like delias or something, but that's not because I don't like their clothes, it's just on the opposite side of the mall and I'm lazy

I dress my weight. (which means no baby tees, juniors dept, or low-rise tight-fitting skinny pants.)
I do have the random goofy immature tee, but I also have some nice quality suits.

I dress my weight.
same here.... And at nearly 36, I can't get away with some of the styles... I prefer my clothes fit and look nice and clean to wearing something that's not right for me.

Screw dressing your "age"
Wear what looks good and work it.
That's all.

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
At work, I think I dress my age, if not older. I work in a very professional/conservative environment. As such, I wear a lot of classics - suits, pants and button downs, cashmere sweaters, etc. I cannot wear any clothes that are too young or too "trendy." However, my work clothes are all good quality and fit well (which is very important). I am constantly on the hunt to find professional clothes are a little trendier than the typical classics!
When I go out on the weekends, I probably dress my age or a little younger (definitely not older!). When I go out with friends, I am usually in jeans, a fun shirt, and heals. But I definitely don't wear things that I think are too teeny-bopper looking.
I think it is most important to wear things that you look good in and fit properly. I think often times people look like they are dressing "too young" when they are wearing things that are just not flattering, i.e. things they may have had the body for when they were 16, but no longer too. JMHO

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I think there are certain things that I just don't see myself wearing anymore...for example the PINK sweatpants with PINK across the a$$...how would I look in that pushing my stroller in the park??? Now, don't get me wrong, there's people that will sport those and look good, etc...for ME, specifically, it just doesn't go anymore. I still wear PINK or A&F sweatshirts/t-shirts, sweatpants, etc. just not the kind that 13-25 year olds would. And the same goes for the tops or tight bottoms...I just have a little bit more of a sophisticated style, and I can still manage to look sexy as h e l l at times

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I'm 26, look younger unless I have makeup on and I wear a mix of everything.
For work I have dress pants, blouses, button down shirts, sweaters, skirts etc. I'll pair it with heels and knee high boots. I have also wore sweater dresses and leggings to work with uggs. it really depends on my mood, weather etc. When I'm not at work I live in jeans, V.S. and juicy couture sweats, etc.
In the warmer months to work I'll wear summery dresses, skirts with cute tops, sandals, wedges, open toe heels but when I'm not at work, I wear shorts, tanks, sneakers, flip flops etc.
Maybe I don't always dress "my age" but age is only a number so who cares, there are days I feel about 60 years old i'll still wear my juicy pants
ETA: I love Forever21 and Rampage!

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
i am 28 and look a couple of years younger. i try to dress professionally at work - sometimes i show a teensy bit of cleavage, nothing more. on the weekends, i wear what i like and what looks good on me. most of the time, my tastes veer away from the juniors department, but that's not because i think i am too old for it - i just like the stuff i find at "adult" stores better (that sounds a little risque )
i do often see women that i feel don't dress their age but IMO, it's usually because the clothing is too tight, or too short, or doesn't fit properly - like they are still trying to wear the clothes they bought in high school. if the clothing is cute and fits well, i don't see anything wrong with it.

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I'm finding it really hard in my early 30s to dress my age. I'm not sure what I am supposed to look like, or feel like for that matter.
I feel like everything looks old fart, or too silly & not put together enough, especially for work.
Like Shorty, I try & dress my weight, but I think I'm in denial about that too!
I don't think low cut tops is something a 30 something shouldn't wear, if you can pull it off & it is the right environment.
This is probably a good time to make up for all those year when you were too young to get away with it. (Unless you didn't listen!)
I feel like I went from too young to wear anything sexy, to too fat to wear anything sexy.

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
I'm in my early 30s and think I can still wear most things. I don't wear hearts, things plastered across my asss or anything glittery. Other than that, I'm open to most anything.
I think it's more about dressing for your body type than anything, but there are definitely some things I think adults look silly wearing.
We've all seen those people out at the mall that are clearly in denial about their age.

I agree with the glitter thing. No glittery shirts. I don't wear glittery makeup anymore either. I do know that as I get older, I have stopped shopping at A&F, AE and Forever 21. I will still go to H&M, Express, XOXO etc. I love shopping the juniors section at Century...the women's section is a bit too grown up. I also love low cut tops, but now instead of a cut to the nipple halter, I might wear a sexy low cut cowl neck. I don't expose my midriff, but I will wear a short skirt, turtleneck, tights and boots. I think if you know how to put stuff together, you can get away wearing clothes from any "section" or department.
ETA: Rhinestones. I don't do rhinestones anymore.

I stopped shopping at some stores when I was teaching and I saw my 8th graders were wearing some of the same clothes I had.

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
i buy and wear what i like and what fits. my wardrobe mainly consists of dresses, skirts and jeans. i am petite (5' 2", 100 lbs) so it is VERY difficult for me to find clothes that fit. not all "women" styles are made in petites or 0 and XS so as a result, i often shop in the juniors dept or stores geared to "young adults".

Re: spinoff to Shopaholic's post- dressing your age
See, I think that when you hit mid 30's, no matter how great shape you're in...
its time to trade in the skin-bearing, extremely tight clothes that looked sexy at 18, for more well-tailored, sophisticated and classic look.
Not saying to trade in the low-cut tops for mom jeans and a frumpy top-
you can still be trendy and fashion forward with accessories,
but I think a woman could look so much sexier when they dress age-apprpriate,
and not like they are trying to compete with 18 year olds.... (not directed at the OP-just in general!)
I see a lot of women in their mid 30's who think less clothing and a lot more makeup is sexy, but they come off looking trashy and like they are trying too hard.
I think 33-35 is the time to pay a little more for clothes that are better-end.
