Spinoff to Shorty's post: Did you ever view the world as safe

Maybe it's because my father was raised in the projects of the Bronx and my mother immigrated to NYC as a teen from a small village in Italy, but we were raised to be almost overly cautious of our surroundings and to always be on the look out. I never viewed the world as safe. What about you?

Never. My mom grew up in the projects too and we were always taught to watch your surroundings at all times.
I make myself feel safe b/c of how I am aware but I dont feel the world is safe no way.

Agreed ... I grew up in Queens (in an area with it's downs & ups) and taking the subway alone to summer school in downtown Manhattan when I was 13 and was always told to "ride with the condutor/doorman".

Walking alone at night, I always walked with my keys through my fingers like a "weapon" (like I could do anythingChat Icon ).

It's also not to say that looking back there weren't things I did that were so unsafe I find it hard to believe I'm alive!!

I was raised the same exact way...I trust no one/ no place......but its still shocking when someone follows you for 5+ miles.

I feel that the world is safe. Yes things could happen, but things happened before I was born too that were just as bad , if not more horrific than the things today. There are always going to be whackjobs out there, we just hear about it more. And wars are always going to be apart of life unfortunately. The media is everywhere. Maybe that is what makes people feel unsafe.

Re: Spinoff to Shorty's post: Did you ever view the world as safe

i used to. i grew up in a sleepy town in southern california where everyone knew one another. it wasn't until a family member tried (very hard) to molest me and my mother took his side, that i started to see that the "cruel and ugly world" is NOT "out there".

i think many times we get lazy and distracted and that's when things can happen. i'm not saying that those who get hurt are lazy ( i hope you understand my point)

Maybe when I was REALLY young but not since then.

I grew up in Queens (still here) and was taught all the precautions that should be taken in ANY situation. My father was also a NYPD detective who worked in Harlem most of his years on the force, so since he encountered horrible things, we knew to be cautious.

I have been followed by car and on foot, we have experienced robberies in our neighborhood, my childhood friend was almost abducted right off of our street corner, perverts always sat next to me on the train on my way to highschool, and I even have witnessed a murder right across from my house. It can happen ANYWHERE, at ANY time. So no, I didnt ever really view myself as "safe." And now, unfortunately, its a thousand times worse.

i think i viewed the world as safe until 9/11. maybe its because i was still pretty young when it happened (19) and didn't really experience any real danager. But ever since then, I think I have tuned into the news more and I am more aware of the dangers out there.

Re: Spinoff to Shorty's post: Did you ever view the world as safe

Actually, I think I am the opposite..I lived in a little bubble in a great neighborhood growing up...I mean, we got the don't talk to strangers talk and all but my parents were never over-cautious. I walked to school and back (with friends & sometimes alone) at 8 yrs old..I rode my bike everywhere - and far, too...

Recently my mom even admitted that she thinks my sister and I were raised a little on the naive side...and that maybe she shielded us too much in that she did not let us be aware of what was really out there...but I guess they weren't that concerned either Chat Icon

Either way, I feel like I learned the hard truth about what the world is really like on 9/11.

9/11 changed everything for me.

Otherwise I just think we have access to more information. With cable and the internet, we hear about what's going on everywhere, not just our local area (NY/NJ/CT).

same for me-

I grew up in Suffolk- kept my keys in the car unlocked on my driveway

I pretty much lived in a bubble and thought nothing bad could ever happen

now I get in my car and hit the lock button on my door before my but hits the seat

I think I have always had a cautious attitude. I was the oldest of my siblings and I was the second set of eyes on the playground (after my parents).

What really opened up my eyes to the world was when a boy named Jacob Wetterling was abducted in my state. I was about the same age as him and he lived in a small town like mine. He had rode his bike with his friends to the convenience store and was abducted after they left the store. I rode my bike to the store all the time too. From then on out, I was super-cautious.

Re: Spinoff to Shorty's post: Did you ever view the world as safe

I have never been able to view the world around me as safe.

I grew up in the projects on the Lower East Side in the 60s. My mom had to fight off men trying to lift her skirt as we walked in my neighborhood!

My family members and I were victims of several crimes. Some too sensitive to discuss here.

I needed to be a street-smart kid, after experiencing those things.
