Spinoff to straw sippy cup: When/why should you start straw cups?

Why should you use the straw cups over regular sippy cups? I don't understand why. DD knows how to use a regular straw, but still has regular sippy cups. Should I switch her over to straw sippy cups? Chat Icon What's the difference (I mean besides the actual straw Chat Icon )? I really have no idea.

I really think it's personal preference. DD took to straws because we're always using straws in our house and she got the hang of them early on, so we just stuck with them.

I remember reading somewhere that when a child s ucks on a straw, he/she uses more muscles ... therefore, they are supposedly better in helping to develop speech...

I don't know who/why they say it helps with their speech - but that's what I've heard.

I swear this morning I was just thinking that I'm going to get rid of all my regular sippys. Great minds....Chat Icon

I also read that they are better for their teeth than the sippy cups with the valves.

yup! i'm a speech therapist... the motions that the child needs to make with their mouth for the straw cups are more "mature", and use more muscles, which helps their muscles be better developed for good speech/articuation down the line...

Also- prolonged use of the spout sippy can cause a tongue thrust which can negatively impact speech. That said, DD is still on a sippy with a spout. We're still working on use of straws.....

Re: Spinoff to straw sippy cup: When/why should you start straw cups?

We did straw cups with DS because he drank from them, but refused the sippy cups. DD would steal DS's straw cups as soon as she figured out how to crawl over to where he left them, so we figured that was a sign we should just give her her own straw cups.

Besides the speech issues, we figured that it is just one less transition for them to learn. They will use a straw for the rest of their lives, so it made sense to just go from the bottle to the straw. One less transition for them to deal with.
