Spinoff to the Scary American People Thread: Do you believe we should have direct election of our president?
In light of seeing that video do you believe we should have "direct election" for the presidential election?
ETA: The definition of "direct election"...
Direct election is a term describing a system of choosing political officeholders in which the voters directly cast ballots for the person, persons or political party that they desire to see elected.

Re: Spinoff to the Scary American People Thread
I'm not sure what you are asking, do you mean if we should do away with the Electoral College & go with the popular vote?

Then my answer is yes, I see no reason for the electoral college, the majority should choose.

I say other. I think you should have to have a VALID reason for voting for your candidate and cite some policy of theirs supported by their voting record. “He's black” or “he's white” or “he's catholic” or “he's a woman” are not good enough.
Am I asking too much??

Re: Spinoff to the Scary American People Thread: Do you believe we should have direct election of our president?
I'm a no - hope I'm not attacked.
My reasoning - Our founding fathers understood the impact that citizens can have on politics and stated that the average american did not have the education or knowledge to directly elect the President. Although we have come a long ways since then, just by reading threads on here and reading about misinformation in the media, there are Americans out there that are misinformed and for them to have a direct impact on who should be President is daunting. I would keep the system for this reason.

You bring up an interesting point with mentioning the misinformation that is spread by the media b/c I wonder if they are as liberal with what they say b/c they know "the people" do not have a say? KWIM?

You know, I'm mixed. I do think our electoral college system needs to be revamped. Right now too much emphasis is given to the swing states IMO, and too little to the states that tend to vote Dem or Rep. So much so that some people choose to stay home rather than vote since they feel their vote does not count.

I agree I do think our electoral process needs reform b/c there is a notion that our votes don't count but I'm not totally sold on direct election either.

I agree. I'm not sure what the answer is. I think between the misinformation being thrown about via email & the press, it's a serious problem - as evidenced by the Howard Stern interviews in Harlem & the folks on the other thread. However, I do think everyone should have the right to vote.

Re: Spinoff to the Scary American People Thread: Do you believe we should have direct election of our president?
I think unfortunately most people think their vote doesn't count. For instance, NY is known as a blue state so anyone not voting democrat could easily feel like why bother it's not going to make a difference - which to some extent is true. But the other option allows anyone of legal age to vote whether they chose to inform themselves on the facts and not hearsay.
So go one way and we feel like we have no voice or say in the matter or go the other way and let the people vote and you could have very ill-advised people voting someone into a serious position.
Either way it's scary.
