Spinoff to throwing change....
As New Yorkers, there are things we do & traditions we have the seem strange to people in other parts of the country (ex: Throwing change in someones new car for good luck). My question is-
What are some traditions you have witnessed in other parts of the country that are the norm for them, but are not normal for us?
For those that live out of state, feel free to answer!
Thanks!

I have to tell you - I moved from NY to FL and have thrown change in my friends' new cars down here... And the response I get is them looking at me like I have 7 heads. LOL suffice to say, it was new to them.
Is this a New Yorker thing? I lived in Queens all my life and never heard of it/saw it until I moved to LI.

Wow. Jean shorts. (At least he was comfortable!)

Aside of how different weddings are in other parts of the country....
thinking that the Olive Garden is good Italian food is pretty strange to me but not to people outside of NY

Re: Spinoff to throwing change....
Now that I think of it there are a few others...mostly slang terms;
refering to a hero as a sub or a hoggie soda as pop getting ID'd at a bar is referred to as "carded." Gym class is referred to as PE
I also find that people in other parts of the country are fascinated by how well NY'ers are in touch with their roots/culture. A lot of people I know from other parts of the country don't really know what their culture/nationality is.

Or what you and I were talking about the other day... having just enough food for the people there?
I live in Maryland, and DHs family will have 6 hamburgers for 6 people there... or 12 cookies for dessert, 2 per person. It BOGGLES my mind, coming from a place where we had enough to feed 50 at all events "just in case"

I just went to a wedding in PA like this. They served EVERYTHING (including cake) one right after the other, and there was no dancing until this was all done.
It actually wasn't cash bar, but it was all well liquor (not top shelf like in this area).

I've been to out of state weddings like this as well. Also, for out of state weddings, we've had to pick our entree choice when we returned the response card.

In the south it is tradition to eat black-eyed peas and greens on New Years Day. This is supposed to bring you good luck and prosperity in the new year.
Oh, I forgot about that one! DH's family lives in Mobile, AL and they do the King cake (not at New Year's, but for Mardi Gras).

Re: Spinoff to throwing change....
My best friend is from Chicago so her wedding was there...the were supposed to do the whole no dancing until after all the food, but she had that modified for us Ny'ers lol and also the bride and groom were part of cocktail hour and still got announced in after cocktail hour.
And at their proms they all carry boquet instead of a corsage.
