Spinoff to tile Q: Tile or hardwood in kitchen
It seems like most of you aren't fond of tile in main living spaces, but what about kitchens? We're going to be renovating our kitchen soon and will need to decide on flooring (the kitchen currently has vinyl). In our last house, we had wood in kitchen, but it was pine so super soft and chipped and dented easily. This time it would be oak (we have dark stained red oak throughout the rest of the house). DH is concerned the wood will still get lots of scratches and dents in a busy kitchen with toddler and new baby coming. I'm not a fan of tile and prefer the look of wood. I also feel like if one of the kids fall on tile, they're more likely to get hurt than wood. My other concern is that tile can look dated as trends change and it's not so easy to take up. It's a whole lot easier to refinish a wood floor if the finish is no longer "in style."
What would you pick?

Spinoff to tile Q: Tile or hardwood in kitchen
They have tile now that looks like wood. I've seen it used on HGTV. I would probably go that route. We have tile in the kitchen (just bought over the summer) and I am not a fan. My SIL has linoleum that looks like tile and I'd rather that over the tile.

That tile that looks like wood is cool, but the rooms surrounding the kitchen are real wood, so I'm afraid that the transition will look odd.

Re: Spinoff to tile Q: Tile or hardwood in kitchen
I have tile in my kitchen, and wood in my living room/dining room. I actually like tile in the kitchen, I think it can be more practical than wood, which can wear and be exposed to water, etc. in kitchen.
But the tile that I have now is this matte, textured light-colored ceramic tile that attracts a ton of dirt. It was here when we bought the house. It also cracks/chips very easily, and I have a young DS who often drops things on the tile.
So if I were to renovate my kitchen, I would stick with tile, but I would choose carefully and get something different than what I have now. I love the look of hardwood in the kitchen, but I don't know that it would be a practical choice (for me). And as much as I love hardwood, I like to break it up a bit and not have ALL wood in my house.

Spinoff to tile Q: Tile or hardwood in kitchen
I like tile in a kitchen since its such a high traffic area. There are so many types of tiles now. My parents put hardwood in their kitchen when they renovated and its very scratched and even faded in some areas from all the traffic, water spills, splashes of food, etc...

It's very much a personal taste lifestyle decision. My kitchen is very high traffic and constantly in use. I have tile and I'm not a fan. You drop a glass and it shatters everywhere, it chips, you have to deal with the grout. Personally, I like a nice high quality vinyl. My brother has a vinyl in his DR that you would swear is hardwood. Whenever I get around to redoing the kitchen the tile is going.

We put wood in last year and I love it. I can't stand trying to keep grout clean. I find the wood so easy to maintain and it looks great.

I have stranded bamboo in my kitchen. You can't dent that stuff with a hammer! (I have samples that I give to visitors to try and dent with a hammer.... they can't... )

We were considering doing strand bamboo everywhere in our new house but I wasn't sure if the bamboo would be good in the kitchen, due to possibility of water damage. I know it's very strong and won't dent but wasn't sure about water/spills. Any issues??

I say wood. It's easier on your feet and there is nothing worse then dropping a glass on a tile floor. You somehow wind up with glass on top of the fridge!! It goes everywhere.
I kind of like the rustic worn look of roughed up wood so for me having it in the kitchen would be fine.

We took up our tile and continued the wood into the kitchen last year. I don't miss the grout and I love the look of the wood. It's very easy to maintain.

We have an open kitchen so hard wood though out. We had tile in a small space is OK but like the above poster said, keeping wood clean is super easy

Re: Spinoff to tile Q: Tile or hardwood in kitchen
I love hardwood floors and prefer them in general...but I am a messy cook and I cook often. I definitely prefer tile for kitchens and bathroom for the food and water factor. They wear and tear much less than wood under those conditions.
I do think wood looks awesome in kitchens, but I would never do it... and I totally agree, the wood looking tiles are really nice, but I don't think it would look right bordering real wood!

I responded to your FM, but I figured other people might want to also know that I put a sample of my stranded bamboo outside for an entire year, exposed to the elements. The finish was worn, and it was a little faded, but a quick sanding would have made it look brand-new. So, if it can handle being outside in the rain, sun, ice, snow, etc, for an entire year with minimal damage, it can definitely handle being in a kitchen.
