Spinoff to toy sale: would you feel offended if you received a gift that you knew was on clearance?
I got a few toy deals at target last week. They had a great disney tea set and I bought 3 of them. They were only $6-7 and then I also bought a few other items that were great deals like a leap frog birthday cake.
I've bought disney tea sets often full price for gifts. Now I can't help but feel we are going to look cheap if I give these as gifts.
Would you feel bad if you received a gift that you knew was on clearance?

I wouldn't feel offended at all! I have a closet full of clearance toys that are given to kids as gifts.

I wouldn't care at all. Actually, I tell people where to get things cheaper if they tell me what they want to get DC.
If I knew a tea set was on clearance, and my kid received it, the first thought would probably be: "I hope they saw the sale on this!"

Are you giving gift receipts? What if someone already has the item and tries to return it?

No. It's the thought that counts to begin with.

I don't give gift receipts. Chances are the receipt would be expired anyway because I buy way in advance.

Re: Spinoff to toy sale: would you feel offended if you received a gift that you knew was on clearance?
I buy on clearance but I spend about 20 for the total gift. If the gift I was able to get originally cost 40 or 50 but I spent 20 on it then I feel like the recipient got a great gift and I got to spend what I feel is the right amount for me.
For example at the Target clearance I got: La La Loopsy big doll for 18 from 30 6 My little Poney for 17 from 40 My little Poney dress up outfit for 8 from 20 My little Poney dress up accessories for 9 from 22 Fairy Princess jewelry box for 12 from 30 Fairy Princess doll for 10 from 20
I will combine some of the toys to make one gift. I still spend what I want to spend but the child will get so much more.
ETA: If the gift is still within the receipt time frame I will give the gift receipt. My friends/ family know that i shop the sales. I still spend $20 which in my experience is the average gift.

Re: Spinoff to toy sale: would you feel offended if you received a gift that you knew was on clearance?
I have mixed feelings about this. In terms of gift giving, DS is too young yet for parties but I usually have a price range in mind when going to one. I try to keep what i spend in that range. If I am lucky enough to get something on clearance, i will buy something else to get to the price range I'm looking for.
I dont know if I'm explaining it right...here's a better example...for the ornament swap we were asked to spend a certain amount on an ornament. It keeps it fair that everyone spent the same amount. I would feel odd not spending the $15 and instead bought a $15 ornament that was on sale for $5. (Usually I buy an ornament that cost more but is on sale FOR $15).
In terms of kids parties, like I said, many times its is the thought that counts.

Re: Spinoff to toy sale: would you feel offended if you received a gift that you knew was on clearance?
I generally don't know where or when gifts are purchased so no, I wouldn't feel offended. My DD's birthday is next week... I hope everyone went out and bought her gifts the day after Christmas and saved 75%!
A cheap gift is one thing - i.e., poor quality, easily broken, etc.
An inexpensive gift is an entirely different matter!

I think I have the opposite mentality.
I usually have a type of gift I want to give and buy it. It is not based on price.
For example, when older DS was 1, we went to a lot of first birthday parties. I usually gave a walking toy or that FP cruise jungle because we liked it. I've bought the same toy for full price or 40% off but gave the same gift.
I love leap frog educational and melissa doug presents. the girls seem to all love princess disney. these are the top gifts I have been giving lately for bday parties for 2-3 year olds.
I just bought a tea set that i think is equal or better than past ones I bought but it was MUCH cheaper because it was on clearance.

Re: Spinoff to toy sale: would you feel offended if you received a gift that you knew was on clearance?
The opposite.
I BRAGGED to my SIL that I found a toy that her kid loved at target for half the price it was going for at other sites/stores.
I also recently shipped my friend some stuff off her registry (but from a different store) & told her to please take it off the registry. I spent about $100 and was able to get her another item off the registry with the savings.
Shopping sales takes energy & time... one should be rewarded!

How would the recipient even know it was on clearance?
Just because it was clearanced at Target, doesn't mean it was clearanced at TRU where you possibly could have bought it.

This. Most of the things I bought on clearance last summer at Target were full price at TRU this holiday season.

wouldn't care at all! I assume everyone nowadays gets a good deal on everything they buy these days and if they didn't. . shame on them I don't care what the price tag is/was.

A gift is a gift no matter how much you spent on it. Kudos to the girls that stock up on gifts on clearance! Very smart move! I have to start doing this myself.

Nope.
They have good toys. If you were buying cheap toys that were poorly made it would be one thing. These toys are all name brand and in perfect condition. I stock up at targets sale for birthday parties my kids are invited too through out the year.
