SPinoff: WHen people want to adopt the dog
I posted on craigslist and got a response from someone who is interested. what would you do to ensure this dog is going into the right hands? I don't want to just give him to anyone.

First, make sure your animal is up to date on vaccines, and is in good health.
1 -Charge a fee 2 - Ask for a vet reference and personal reference. Call both. 3- Create an application 3 - If you can, do a home visit

Re: SPinoff: WHen people want to adopt the dog
Why would I charge a fee? Would this person expect to get him for free?

Charging a fee would attract a more serious person. Also I belive that you are required by CraigsList to do so.

Charging a fee would deter people who want a dog for the wrong reasons.

you aren't required by craigslist to put up a fee. you could try petfinder.com for the classifieds. you can put up a fee (don't make it expensive) and if you want, donate that to a shelter. if you really feel the person is right for the dog, then why not give him away for free. there's no harm if you go with your heart.

People will often take a FREE anything....so when it comes to dogs or cats, charing a small fee will weed out some of the wrong people. I assume you already listed him as free though...so that is a concern.

honestly, you just go with your gut. you'll know when the right ppl come along.
whenever getting a new animal i always tell the breeder or whomever alot about myself so they can judge if it seems like a good match or not.

Re: SPinoff: WHen people want to adopt the dog
I didn't mention anything about the dog being free or an adoption fee. The guy seems really nice (we spoke over the phone for about 10 minutes) and he is coming by tomorrow to see raider.

Definitely have an adoption form and please do charge a fee, even a small one - it makes a big difference.
Good luck and keep us posted

It has been absolutely proven why you should not give a dog away for free:

Re: SPinoff: WHen people want to adopt the dog
I would try to see his house. See if he has other pets and what condition they are in.
Also - not sure about the fee. I feel like people might perceive that as you trying to benefit from getting rid of the dog. Not sure that would rub me the right way. On the other hand the PP have a good point about attracting serious people only. Not sure
I would prolly try to see his house then go with my gut with no fee
I hope it works out!

I hope it works out! I just want to address this. People who are involved in rescue know what the fee is about. If the person interested in the dog asks, explain why. Tell them that the fee, if you decide to do so, is not for your profit, but to weed out any undesireable prospects. Show the interested party the article if you feel the need. If you feel guilty about keeping any nominal adoption fee, you could always donate it to a number of animal related charities in your pup's name.
Just as a side note, many organised animal rescue & adoption orgs that are privately owned can charge up to $1000 or more for an adoption, especially if there is a medical condition involved. It is not unheard of for the orgs to charge several hundred to ensure that the animal is going to the proper home. A nominal fee of around a hundred dollars or so can prevent someonw with poor intentions of getting the dog. Once you explain this the adoptor should comply.
Good luck re-homing the dog.

I agree and being involved with rescue group myself we always do home visit. Maybe bring the dog over to the house and feel it out. Does he have other dogs? Are they fixed? Does he have children? Is the house fenced? Will they have enough time to train and take care of this dog? You can ask whatever you want remember this is a dog you care about and what to see him in a loving home.
