This just my opinion, but I think the reason some people cheat is because they have low self-esteem. I have known people that have cheated, and I think they needed that extra attention for an ego boost. The way I see it is if someone is unhappy in a relationship then do something to change it. Even if that change is deciding to leave. (Believe me, I know that's easier said than done in some cases.) I think that sometimes people don't have the confidence to ask for what they want or to leave in a bad situation. Again, just my honest opinion. I'm curious to see what others have to say. I didn't read responses yet.

I think a major reason why BOTH men and women cheat is simply because they can get away with it. It's an 'adventurous oppurtunity".

i don't think the reason men and women cheat are different. there are some women just looking for sex as there are some men looking for the emotional connection.

Exactly. There are different trends in female and male cheating, that's just a fact. It's like male/female communication styles.
Where is this trend fact shown? I really never saw proof of this, more like sweeping generalizations from people like us in what they think are the reasons why men or women would cheat. I know two male acquaintances that have cheated because of emotional needs. I also know a female who cheated because and I quote "the guy was hot."
You could start by reading Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, but I took several Gender Psych/Gender Communication classes which helped me understand the differences--and there are big differences. Men and women definitely deal with emotions differently and communicate differently.
I did my undergrad thesis on male/female communication differences, so that's an easy starting point. Men are more "doers"--in their male/male relationships, generally men focus on activities or talking about activities (watching a baseball game, going to a car show, playing poker). While doing the activity they talk more about the activity. Women, on the other hand, even when participating in activities, talk more about people and their emotions. Women are much more likely to open up to one another. Does this mean men don't confide in one another? No, but I can say with certainty that men getting cheated on are a lot less likely to share their feelings with the world in a chat room. Is it nature or nurture? It's a combination. Men are raised to be more strong and stoic, while women really are the softer, gentler sex.
