Re: Spinoff...does your food snobbiness (or food "openmindedness") show in your meals at home

it depends- if its a good canned sauce or a good spice rub- ill use it

like, i generously pour the garlic and herb mrs.dash over boneless skinless chicken nad broil it- it forms a delicious crust on the chicken.

i also do love the near east couscous boxes and i do love the while grain boxed rices with spice mix

other than that stuff though, its all fresh veggies, fresh poultry and steaks and home made spice mixes and marinades

Re: Spinoff...does your food snobbiness (or food "openmindedness") show in your meals at home

there seems to be a notion here that cooking from scratch takes an amazingly long time....

in my experience, that is not the case...meat is meat...it takes the same amount of time you cook no matter what you put on it....water takes the same amount of time to boil...

chopping fresh garlic, onions, and herbs doesn't take much time either....

so, to dispell any other notions, I am not slaving away at the stove all night.

I go to the gym after work, get home and do my thing. we eat late, yes, but cooking wise, I don't imagine it takes much longer than it does anyone else.

I use adobo, sazon, cubitos de pollo, carne, calabaza, etc. and sofrito and recao from the Goya line. My sister makes her own recao and sofrito, but I deal with the frozen stuff just fine.

I grew up eating jarred sauces, that's what I cook with.

Thankfully, DH grew up the same way, so he loves my cooking.

Dayum girl, your food must be amazing if it's all from scratch. Lucky doggie who married you! Chat Icon

ETA: My marinades ARE from scratch...garlic, onions, peppers, spices all blended, from scratch. I don't think anything in a bottle can give it authentic flavor (that is reminiscent of mi isla, that is).

I think I am a little bit of both. I like to make complicated meals from scratch but sometimes I cut corners in areas where it seems logical. For instance when I make chili I use canned kidney beans and pinto beans rather than buying dried beans and letting them soak over night etc. (that would just take an incredibly long time) but if I am making lentil soup I obviously use dried lentils.

I, too, use far east couscous and will eat lean cuisines for lunch if I am trying to eat something fast and lose weight.

Oh and also when I make sauce occasionally I will use fresh tomatoes but for the most part I use canned tomatoes.

I REFUSE to use any type of premade/packaged/instant/helper/aroni anything

I make my own spice rubs and marinades. I cringe at the idea of using jarred sauces, preseasoned raw meats (like Perdue done its or whatever) and when I cook, I cook for real.

I don't have kids.

and people say that may change, BUT my husband knows how I feel about cooking, and I think we are BOTH hoping to continue in the "I cook for real and don't heat up what other people have already made" vein.

will that happen, I don't know...but I will surely turn my nose up at MYSELF, the day I open a box of Shake n Bake.

ETS: I've decided that the inverse of "food snob" will be "openminded eater" lest someone think I am being judgmental. Chat Icon

If it weren't for the "I don't have kids", I would say I'm married to you.

Pre-packaged doesn't bother me, so I will make the Kraft Mac & Cheese on the rare night I'm cooking.

I am the same way. I love to cook, I truley take pride in my cooking, and especially more so now that I have kids.

Anyone who knows me knows you will NEVER find jarred sauce or hamburger helper at my house. I love using fresh ingredients when I cook, and I cook every night except for when we go out to dinner, and I have to say, it is nice to go out just to take a break from cooking and cleaning, but I honestly never enjoy(and my DH says this all the time) dinner as much as when I make it myself at home!

We don't cook meat (or I don't, at least). I do, however make homemade seitan and cook it in homemade broths. But I marinate them in store-bought marinades. It's not so much that it takes an incredibly long time, but would take time, trial and error that I know my DH doesn't want to put fourth. Making my own sauces is something I'd like to try my hand at, but since I was raised on jarred, I don't have a great recipe to start from, you know? The idea of chopping and stirring and doing all that to have a giant pot of inedible tomato gunk is what keeps me from doing it.
As for herbs, I prefer dried because when I buy fresh at the store they usually go bad before I can use them all. I feel more strongly about certain things being fresh than others. And sometimes I prefer garlic powder to fresh garlic Chat Icon

I really dont think too much about food preparation. It isn't my thing. I lack the domesticity my mother had. Then again she had more time and a lot more money than we do.

Certain things I make from scratch, like sauce, but if I didn't have my fix of rice-a-roni at least once every other week, I think I would go into withdrawal......

Re: Spinoff...does your food snobbiness (or food "openmindedness") show in your meals at home

i'm somewhat of a food snob. we eat rice a roni and i buy preggo if i dont have any of MIL's homemade sauce but other than that everything is prepared fresh. we most definitely do not eat tv dinners or anything like that, but the occasional "boxed" item is used.
