Spoon feeding - help!

We are finally starting DS on rice cereal. Feeding from a spoon is much harder than I thought.

I tried to feed him BEFORE I know he will be hungry but obviously feeding from the spoon is not fast enough so while I am feeding the rice he realizes "Oh %$#@ I am hungry!" and screams bloody murder til we give him the bottle.

So I changed my strategy and next time fed him 2 oz of formula before the cereal to take the edge off, but when i took away the bottle, he screamed bloody murder again, and I'm not talking fussing, I'm talking purple-in-the-face screaming, until I gave him the bottle back. Then he filled up on formula and wouldn't eat the rice.

Next I'm going to try in between bottle feedings, when he's not hungry. I just don't know what to try next?! Help! Any tips? He is 6 months.

Re: Spoon feeding - help!

we tried the cereal first and it did not work, they flipped out. so they drank their bottle and then got cereal. They are getting all the nutrients from the formula or bm, not the cereal, so don't worry if he is full, perhaps try the cereal again in a half an hour. Eventually they will eat them together, I know some people who give the bottle and then an hour or so later give the cereal or food.

It is new to him. Good luck!

My son still does that and he's been spoon fed for 4 months! I try to hide the bottle from him so he doesn't see it, because if he does, it's all over and I have to give it to him. He usually eats the food first though now - even if he cries the first few bites. I soldier on because it takes a little while for him to realize his stomach is getting full.
