SPR - cooking chicken in a crock pot...?
i picked up a slow cooker recipe book and i'm reading the recipes to make different types of chicken in the slow cooker, but alot of them do not list water as an ingredient ...some of them list wine as an ingredient, so i figured that would "cook" the chicken, but what about the other ones? does chicken not really need water to cook?! i'm so confused! i'll try to find a recipe to show as an example..

I don't put in water unless the recipe calls for it...I *think* it says water if needed

Re: SPR - cooking chicken in a crock pot...?
hmm how bizarre! i'm a big "follow the recipe word by word" type so i hope the chicken lets out some juices or something else cooks it cause i have never heard of not adding some type of liquid to cook chicken!

Usually it'll say cover chicken in water or something like that
are you looking at a specific recipe? does it ask for a condensed soup or veggies or anything else? Are they just chicken breasts? Or is it a whole chicken?

Re: SPR - cooking chicken in a crock pot...?
i'm looking at specific recipes. here's a couple from the book that i'm reading - "fix it and forget it cookbook"
donna's cooked chicken
chicken 1 onion seasoned salt pepper minced garlic
another one...
valerie's & stacy's roast chicken
3-4 lb chicken salt to taste pepper to taste butter basil to taste
that's it! the directions say to cook low 4 hrs for the first one. for the second it says cook on high 1 hr, then low 8-10 hrs. would enough juices from the chicken be sufficient to cook it, do you think?

Remember that the crock pot keeps all the steam in, which is different when you use an oven. Meats have a lot of natural juices, which are very flavorful!

Re: SPR - cooking chicken in a crock pot...?
I just made chicken stew in the crockpot last night- and it called for wine and chicken stock as the liquids. No water was mentioned in the recipe- so I didn't put it in there!

Re: SPR - cooking chicken in a crock pot...?
We made a whole chicken in a crock pot yesterday and you will be AMAZED at how much juice the chicken lets out.
We added absolutely no water or liquid at all and when the chicken is done, it is sitting in about an inch of liquid.

Re: SPR - cooking chicken in a crock pot...?
wow wow wow! i'm so shocked, you learn something new everyday! i was afraid if i put it in there it'd just sit there and burn the bottom. i tried a different recipe that called for broth and wine so at least there's some liquid in there, but next time i'll def try the liquid-less recipes and see how it turns out!! so excited!!
