SPR: Bar Mitzvah Gift?
DH and I are going to a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday for the son of one of DH's coworkers. Since we are not Jewish, we have only gone to one other Bar Mitzvah and have NO IDEA how much to give.
Any ideas?

People traditionally give multiples of 18 - the corresponding Hebrew letter to the number 18 means "life." People will also give $120 - good luck.

Back when I was Bat mitzvahed I agree you could have given chai 18 double chai meaning 36 bucks and so on... These days the parties are alot more $$ so I suggest the 120 like stated above. My thought is like a wedding, you have to at least cover your meal.

Re: SPR: Bar Mitzvah Gift?
Thank you!
One more thing: how do I dress? It is an afternoon affair. I have a few dresses but I am really unsure. Do I dress like a wedding? Less formal?

I wore a black sweater dress last weekend with high heeled boots - Sunday at noon.
The other young women wore cute dresses - not too fancy, and this was an Orthodox affair which tends to be a little dressier.
ETA - Definitely not as fancy as a wedding...

I think you could. I'd go more so by where the reception is held.

The invitation says Temple Tivkah. I know NOTHING about temples and such.
BTW, if anyone feels these is going too off topic for parenting, feel free to FM your input.

I think this is perfect! Keep the cardi on for the temple part and take it off for the party

Yes, I was going to say that. Its totally appropriate but in the temple keep your shoulders covered.

I think that dress is perfect and yes... wear a cardi. I guess depending on some temples your arms should be covered during services. I'm reformed so they're not strict about that
Temple catering halls are actually very beautiful. Think of it like going to a wedding. Have fun!
