SPR... Is this Even Possible? Masters Degree
I'm really contemplating going for a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology.
I have a BA in PR/Communications (which I got at Kean Univ in 2000)
I was considering applying there b/c I know they have a great Speech program. Plus, the fact that DS has a Speech Delay and my sister is a Speech Therapist makes me really interested in the field. It's rewarding and I want to get out of the business world
I don't even know where to begin! I also WFT and have a 4 month old and 2 year old. They go to daycare.
Do I start now? How do I go about taking the GRE? I've been out of the college world for so long I feel so lost!

Can you take classes on line via distance learning?

Can your DH support your family financially while you go to school? You should be able to take out student loans even if he can't.
Anything is possible if you want it badly enough. I say go for it! You'll be able to make it work.

Re: SPR... Is this Even Possible? Masters Degree
The problem with they "Therapy" fields are the Lab hours. At least that was my problem when I went back for teaching. I considered, and am now kicking myself, do Speech, or OT along those lines but I wasn't in a position to quit my job to do the Lab hours. I had to take a leave to do Student teaching and this is before I was married with a kid.
If you are able to not work or have a flexible job than maybe.
I don't know, you need to do ALOT of research about what the hours and Lab hours are kwim?

Re: SPR... Is this Even Possible? Masters Degree
Thanks all! The issue is that DH is a contractor. Owns his own business. Depends on his work. When he's busy it's great, but if he's slow then he doesn't get anything. I'm on salary and I have the benefits for the family. That's the main reason for working Also, we moved to NJ about a year ago and DH had to cut a lot of prices that he got paid on LI. Now I guess there's more competition.
Ugh... it's so tough He totally supports anything I choose, but I don't want us to be real tight for years either

It's a great field, but it's also VERY competitive!
The master's programs are very small so they are many people trying to get in and only a few do. I think my class was like 24 or so people (and that was big).
You'll need to take all of the prerequisite courses. I really don't recommend doing it online because I think you need that in-person experience.
For your master's you'll really need to do it full-time. You will have a number of placements (for me, it was 1 internship and 3 externships). You'll basically have your internship hours and then have to go to class at night (for me, it was usually working 8-3 or 4 and classes 5-8 or so). I went to Hunter
Let me know if you have any questions!

ITA with all of this. I am not a Speech Therapist but someone in DH's family went back to school for it. She applied to a LOT of programs and only got into ONE, which was far from where she was living at the time. She had to go full time, and with the pre-reqs, externships and internships the above poster mentioned, it took her 3.5 years to complete (and she was going FULL time not working anywhere)!!!
I'm not trying to discourage you by any means, I just think trying to juggle that with two kids and working full time would be extremely tough if not impossible for me. if you had a lot of support from DH and parents /inlaws, maybe it would be possible...

Re: SPR... Is this Even Possible? Masters Degree
I'm a SLP and don't want to discourage you, but please find out what is expected before applying. The programs are very competitive. It isn't like teaching, as your masters will probably be 60+ credits like an MBA. You will have to do at least 4+ clinical practica, each 1 whole semester long, so basically work full time as an intern with a SLP in various settings (1-2 will be "in house" at the university). You don't get paid for those...you will have to do coursework in addition to the practica. That being said, I love the field. I don't think many people realize how much we do b/c language is everywhere.
