I am totally hung up on this camera thing.
Is it possible to get a good one for this amount of money, or do I need to go higher??

Yes, the Nikon D40 is selling for less than that and I got my Nikon D60 with 2 lenses for around $600. BTW, I love the camera -- I've gotten some great shots

the canon rebels are also in this price range... i would just buy the body and upgrade the lens though!

I *think* mine was $699 with an extra lens. But I do think it was a Christmas special.
I just checked Best Buy right now and it is $712. I know a lot of girls get them from camera shops, but we had our reasons for getting it at Best Buy

I strongly suggest the Nikon D40. B&H has it listed as $499.95. It's a great beginner camera, which later on you can grow into as your photography skills get better. Down the line, rather than upgrade your camera, you can opt for better lenses.
Also when factoring in price to any camera, keep in mind there are accessories you'll need.
The big one that is a must to get is a filter for your lens. Any filter so that the lens is protected. The cost can be $20-$100s.
I also got an large memory card (4GB) because I take a lot of photos & offload them as soon as I'm home.
An extra battery is handy too.
I'm on my second DSLR so if you have any questions, feel free to FM me.
