recommend your digital camera (not SLR)
I think I might put off an SLR this year and go with a new digital (mine is ANCIENT!) (I would want one anyway if I got an SLR, for convenience)
I am thinking a canon powershot, but not sure which one.

I have an olympus and I LOVE it. I also have a cheap little Kodak for school and it's fine. But I'd stick with Olympus, Canon or Nikon.

Re: recommend your digital camera (not SLR)
Canon is rated the highest by consumer reports for a point & shoot.
but I would really recommend an SLR! we have a Nikon and it's fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wait for holiday sales... I think the prices are going to be VERY good this year. plus stores will be offering 0% interest for ___ number of months. if you can swing that, I would say it is WORTH IT!

Re: recommend your digital camera (not SLR)
I think if you're not going to buy extra lenses to swap out or experiment with f-stops, shutter speeds, time lapse photography and all that - that you are making a very wise decision in sticking with a non-DSLR.
This is coming from someone who does have a DSLR but I rarely leave my settings on auto. I can't see spending hundreds more if you aren't going to take advantage of all the features. It's like buying a car because it can go 150 miles per hour when you never break the speed limit.
Believe it or not, many of the non-DSLR's have better functionality where they can allow you to change settings that I mentioned before. They also make for good enlargements, depending on the settings you choose on the camera itself.
Here is my advice: go to a brick-and-mortar like Cameta Camera. Tell them what you want, your budget, and make them sell you. Hold them in your hand, zoom in on something outside the store to see how far the lens can go, take a picture in semi-darkness to see how the flash illuminates your subject.
In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I can't vouch for other manufacturers because I haven't tried them. I would suggest you get the largest memory card you can afford, a tripod, an extra battery, a recharger, and possibly a remote control - if they are compatible. I say this because they are the things we found invaluable over the years.
Good luck with your search!

This might not be all about the camera. In low-light situations (and although it may seem to you like it's not dark, the camera thinks differently) you can have blurriness if you are hand-holding the camera. I know it sounds crazy to carry around a tripod but they have really portable, bendy, adjustable ones that are great.
Sometimes I just put two legs of the tripod against my body while holding it in my hand to give it some extra stability. Since my tripod is light, I just keep it attached to the camera all the time when I go out.
A camera with image stabilization will help that, but not in all situations.
Check this out... Much cheaper than a new camera!

I never even heard of that But I do need a new camera too. I don't mind learning all the lingo and what everything does, I just want to make a good investment, that I will use.

Re: recommend your digital camera (not SLR)
i've had 2 canon point and shoots and have been really happy with both of them. we just got a new one- the Canon powershot SD 870 with image stabilization. ( it in the "digital elph" family). DH also has a canon SLR that we use for special things ( its too big to carry around on vacation and stuff, though) on my new canon, the pictures are great, nice and clear and colorful. i think this is a good example, i just took this when we went to NC last weekend... this was on the auto setting, nothing special.. just look how clear the butterfly came out!

Re: recommend your digital camera (not SLR)
I had the Canon powershot elph for a good 6+ years. LOVED that camera.
Now we have the Canon powershot sx100 is. I LOVE this camera. To me getting an SLR didn't seem practicle. I love photography I even majored in it in college but with the powershot I have it will me all the time. Fits in my bag.I couldn't do that with the slr. The zoom on it is 10x and it's 8.0 mega pixels. We took it with us to Hawaii and got great shots. We went up Diamond Head and I couldn't imagine lugging the SLR with us. The canon is very user friendly also.
Here's some pics.

Even closer with zoom
without the zoom

Re: recommend your digital camera (not SLR)
Although I am a Nikon loyalist, I actually like my mom's Fuji Finepix better than my Nikon Coolpix. My friend also has gotten some great shots with a Canon point and shoot.
