SPR: Would you cancel the trip?
DH and I have been looking forward to our first family vacation with DS since before he was even born. My parents go to Myrtle Beach a few times a year for several weeks at a time so we've planning to join them in September for a week since we thought DS would be a good age, 10 months. My parents would be paying for most of our accommodations - we insist on paying for the difference it would cost them to get a 3BR condo instead of the 2BR they usually get.
We are supposed to book today and my DH told me this morning that he's been worried for a few weeks that his job is in jeopardy. He didn't want me to worry so he's been keeping it from me (which is a whole other issue for another post) but it came out today. My immediate reaction is that we should absolutely not go on the trip and should tighten up/scale back in other areas immediately (1st birthday photo shoot that's already schedule, 1st birthday party, my 30th, etc.). Even though my parents are paying for a very large chunk, we would be driving down (lot of gas $), food money, etc. and it all adds up. DH still thinks we should go since we've been planning forever and because he wants me and DS to be happy.
I am a SAHM (although I have a side business and do some freelance writing - but this is money for savings, groceries, gifts, entertainment - it doesn't go towards our monthly expenses) and we have to watch our spending. Obviously now that DH is worried about his job I will be looking for a job as well in case he loses his, but I've always been in a specialized field and in this economy who knows how long it might take me to find something.
So after this long post, would YOU cancel the trip? I'm so upset. We've already been having a bunch of other issues in the family...I was not expecting worrying about his job on top of it all.

I would still go on the trip.
He *might* lose his job. If he does, then you can make necessary budget adjustments but this is something you probably need and deserve and are looking forwrad to. It also sounds like a financially reasonable vacation.
Go and make some memories with your family.

ITA. It's not like you're going to be blowing thousands of dollars to go. Driving there and back might cost you $200, that's not bad.
Would taking a vacation right now put his job more at risk? If that's the case then I might reconsider, but if it's for other reasons then I would go and try not to worry too much about the "what-ifs".

I'm not sure what I'd do. You can rationalize it any way you want it - either a trip that's pretty much paid for that you won't be taking for awhile OR save money just in case.
I think it would depend on what my financial situation is - do you live hand to mouth? will his job offer severance? What field is he in?

I think I would cancel the trip. We worry about the same thing so I can relate.

Re: SPR: Would you cancel the trip?
I think it depends...
Do you already have the cash for the trip? You don't want to be adding onto expenses to fund it.
Are you emergency funds already stocked? As long as the money you will be spending won't take away from covering an unforseen emergency.
If you can afford it go. If you think you will need the money if he loses his job then I would cancel.
