St. Catherine's rooming in policy?
Sorry. I meant what is their policy on taking the baby out of the room/away from mama to be put in the nursery/under nurse's care? I would like the baby with me at all times....I heard some hospitals have mandatory nursery hours, and baby is away from mama for long periods of time.

Most hospitals these days encourage you to keep the baby. No matter what they will have to go to the nursery for testing etc every morning.
I gave birth at Good Sam and even if you did send the baby to the nursery they would bring the baby back if they got too fussy.

I had ds there 2 years ago. They give you the choice if you want the baby to stay with you all the time or you can have baby sleep in the nursery.

I believe most hospitals encouraging the baby to room in 24/7 with you- except of course when they need to be seen by the Dr, tests etc..
Luckily mine let me send her back at night because I wanted to savor my last 2 nights of sleep before going home to endless sleepless nights!

Thank you! I hope it's still the same. I don't know if it's true, but I heard some hospitals, like Southside, take the baby into the nursey mandatory from 11 - 7. That seems like a long time to me.

Re: St. Catherine's rooming in policy?
I encourage you to be open minded about keeping the baby with you at night.
I delivered at Stony Brook and I was super excited to have baby with me 24/7 -- but after she was born I had been awake for well over a day. When they took her to have her bath, DH and I both completely passed out. Never slept so hard... but only for about 45 minutes when she came back. We had family there all day visiting and that first night was hard. I was falling asleep while trying to breastfeed and knew I had to call the nurse and say look, please take her...
If you're breastfeeding they'll bring the baby back to you when they need to -- but they told me babies often sleep better in the nursery because they can't smell mommy. I believe it to be 100% true.

Re: St. Catherine's rooming in policy?
Even when you have a roommate they encourage you to keep the baby with you??
So...two women recovering from delivery and two newborns in one room...that sounds very chaotic.
with DD i had a private room at huntington hospital (which i paid for) and DD was in the NICU, so i had no choice...this time i wont be paying for a private room, so i guess this will be an interesting experience....hmmm...maybe i should start saving now for the private room! LOL

I delivered at SouthSide and that is not the case. You could have kept the baby in your room all night if you wanted to.

I had my DS with me and a roommate and her DD. I didn't hear her baby that much but maybe it was because my DS was crying 24/7.
Its not like you are going to get much sleep in the hospital and you might as well start taking care of the baby from the get go.

Re: St. Catherine's rooming in policy?
I delivered at St. Catherine's 4 years ago. I had a roommate. They took the baby back to the nursery at night. I had an option to keep him but they talked me into taking him for the night. So he stayed in the nursery. I didnot have a good experience their so I was okay with them taking him since I was so stressed!! Hated having a roommate. They didn't have private rooms then.
Next I delivered at SB and they didn't even ask if I wanted the baby in nursery over night. When I went on hospital your they mentioned that they really encourage you to keep the baby in room the whole time. I had private room and really enjoyed baby staying with me the whole time. You get breaks when they take baby for tests, bath, etc... It was a nice experience keeping him with me.
I BF both children.
You can decide after you deliver. Don't worry about deciding now. You have to see how you will feel then.
