Stairs? -UPDATED WITH PICS? PLEASE GIVE YOUR OPINIONS!!

We just installed new stairs and I am having a hard time deciding how to stain them. My floor is all wood and is a light color stain with a mahagony stain trim just around the border. I just installed crown molding and base molding and molding trim around all doors and windows and stained them a very dark brown color.......How would you stain the steps?
Do them all light with the dark brown molding
or
stain the entire stairs and banister dark to match all the molding?

TIA

IF you can, can I see pictures of anyones stairs that are stained wood.

Re: Stairs?

Here are 2 pics of the stairs, and a pic that shows the color of the floor. This was before the railing (that I hate) was put up

Re: Stairs?

i would stain the stairs the same color as the wood floors. there should be a seamless flow. can you add the dark molding trim? if you plan on insatlling a stair runner i wouln't worry about the trim.

Nice Job!

Is that a mix of pine and oak? Is the floor in the room on that lower level cherry colored, a mix of dark and light? If yes, I would stain the stairs with the lighter cherry (minwax cherry 235) and do the base around the sides in the dark mahogany to continue the theme. Or, you can do everything cherry. Since it's a stair case it's a transition point from one area to the next so doing it one color would look fine as well. Are the base boards upstairs the same dark mahogany color? If yes, then it may look better to do the two colors. Are you staining it yourself?

Re: Stairs? -UPDATED WITH PICS? PLEASE GIVE YOUR OPINIONS!!

thank you
yes it is a combination of pine and oak.

so you are saying to do the kick plate and the top part (the actual step you stop on) the same color as the floor and then everything else on the sides/or on the wall the dark color the base molding trim is ???

what about that awkward trim that is seen when you are looking at the stairs from the side and is below the railing? what color would you do? the dark?
and would you do the railing the dark as well?

sorry so many questions but we just gutted our house and this is one of the last steps and I am lost on a decision here.

YES

YES, I didn't think about that but that would look nice as well. Either way will work.

Not a problem. It is a difficult choice. If you don't like it you can always sand back down to bare wood and start over. It's work but it can be done.
