Staph infection its hitting a lot of schools update now Roosevelt

so far here on long island reported on the news south hampton, Longwood, Freeport and Baldwin students have it, edited I forgot about Sachem

on news today Roosevelt now has a staph infection, didnt get the details yet. ugh

not reported ( patients of ours told us the schools evacuated and janitors had to stay till 3 am to disinfect AND the school nurse called the CDC) Manhasset, Amityville students got it

very scary hitting day cares, elementary, middle and high school.

Staph is person to person contact- by an open wound or cough- affects the blood, skin, lungs and bones.

Can be anything from a boil to the flesh eating disease.
CDC says it has killed more than Aids to date.

Virginia, New Hamphire and Mississippi students died from it.
other states with contacts Conn.,Maryland,North Carolina and Ohio.

wash wash wash your hands.

Anyone nervous about it?

yes I am very nervous about it- we all have to wash our hands and it won't hurt to carry the antibacterial hand sanitizers as well.

After watching the news the past couple of days, it really got me nervous. It's scary to have something like that spreading around so virulently.

Re: Staph infection its hitting a lot of schools

It used to be confined to hospitals, but some how it is being spread by kids, they think from the gym equiptment ( like football) but they are not sure b/c of it hitting the younger age groups too.

I hope they figure out real quick why its being spread outside of the hospital and whats with schools and day cares what do they have in common besides the kids? do daycares give out food? is it the same food that distributes to other schools? just a thought

I think that it is being a little over exaggerated..... this is from Southampton...
Southampton School
Kids carry allll sorts of germs...that's why you need to wash your hands all the time... cough/sneeze into your elbow and just avoid touching public things.. just like anywhere else not just schools

I knew a guy that had the flesh eating version of this in the mid 90's, remember that outbreak? His arms were badly scared & he had some other long term affects.

I have a 13 year old stepdaughter, I'm worried about her, middle school kids are gross.

of course the super intendant is going to sen out a letter like that- do you know what a mass scare would do? that is why they are calling it more the super bug than MRSA b/c they - CDC arent sure exactly what it is. and that alone would cause a media roar. Channel 12 news a few days ago had a big story on it. went as far as saying you can get it from touching a door handle if the infected person touched it, now MRSA isnt spread that way, and MRSA can be treated with drugs but its resistant to antibiotics, but apparently this "superbug" is drug resistant.
this super bug is just like MRSA with its symptoms.
Its very scary and just the beginning.
I hope it ends very soon.

edited to add, yes kids carry a lot of germs but not a staph germ- this is more serious

No, I'm not really worried about it.

MRSA can be treated with antibiotics, just not methicillin or its derivatives, so it is not a "superbug" or a true multi-drug resistant bug.

Healthy school-age kids should be easily able to recover from MRSA infection. It is a more serious problem in infants, the elderly and people whose immune systems don't function properly.

I'm very nervous about it. My SIL got a staph infection in her eye when she was visiting her dad at a dialysis center. It's been over 6 months of aggressive treatment, I think she's on her 9th medication and it's FINALLY starting to clear up, but they don't know if she's going to lose some or all of her vision.

ita with all ur info! plus this superbug has been around for years in hospitals and nursing homes...so its really not an outbreak per se it just hasnt gotten media time til now

Re: Staph infection its hitting a lot of schools update now Roosevelt

Having a daughter in day case and relatives that are on high school/college sports teams, yes I'm concerned. But other than washing my hands (and my DD's hands often), trying to limit touching my hands to my eyes/mouth, and cleaning/covering any open cuts/wounds, all of which I should be doing anyway (especially since flu season is coming up), I don't plan on doing much else.

I just also want to add that years of over-use and misuse of antibiotics and the ubiquitous use of antibacterial soaps (as well as other antibacterial products) is at least partially to blame for breeding these "super bugs." I hope this scare will finally convince people that antibiotic soaps are not only not necessary in most cases, but are speeding the evolution/natural selection of bacteria to breed bugs that are resistant to all but the strongest antibiotics.

I agree about the over-use of antibiotics, and I had a very hard time selection a pediatrician who agreed with my philosophy regarding this. But.... I thought that it was recently proven that the antibacterial soaps did not kill more bacteria than regular soap? Chat Icon

I was talking to my mom in Florida and she said its being reported all over down there as well.

Wonder why we are hearing so much about this now and why it is so widespread?

Yes, that's the point. Antibacterial soaps are no more effective at reducing bacteria on the hands than regular soap, and since there is evidence that the antibacterial agents in these soaps may help build up a cross-resistance to other antibiotics, they have no positive purpose. Here is a link to a research article summarizing the latest findings on this. Aiello et al., Clin. Inf. Dis., 2007

ETA: I re-read your post, and I just wanted to clarify. Antibacterial soaps don't kill a larger percentage of cells than just soap, but while the soap and water removes the bacteria equally with no preference (as does 70% alcohol or bleach), exposure to antibiotics like triclosan is an outside pressure that, yes, will kill off most bacteria, but some will be able to survive. It's literally natural selection in bacteria- and we're speeding it up. Think about it- if you use antibacterial soap, you're killing off all but let's say 1% of the bactera on your hands. Ok, well 2 hours later that bactera has divided many times, and now if you use the antibacterial soap again an even higher percentage of those bacteria will be resistant to the soap. The next time it'll be an even higher percentage. And so on and so on.
