started today - No more co-pays for birth control, pap smears, or mammograms?
anyone hear about this?
from article
Today is a big day for birth control. Under President Obama's health care reforms private insurance companies have to start providing contraception for free on August 1. That means no more co-pays for birth control.
also
Starting Wednesday, millions of American women will no longer pay for birth control pills, Pap smears or mammograms -- not even a co-pay. Women also have the right to free breast-feeding support, supplies for pregnancy-related diabetes, also known as gestational diabetes, and even screening for domestic violence.

Ironically, I went on the 31st and was pleasantly surpised to not pay a copayment.

I did hear about this but I am wondering how it will be enforced.

Interesting... I just asked for a prescription for a generic because it cost a lot more under our new insurance plan..

Me too. So if my doctor calls in my prescrip to CVS, I don't pay a co-pay?
It almost sounds too good to be true.

I thought i read somewhere that it goes into effect depending on when the health care plans year starts/ends. So not all plans start right away.

Don't worry, rising premiums will make up for it...

Not missing something CN.
I am not on birth control, but I was it was so frikkin expensive. I hated the generic. It did not agree with me, so I always paid for the brand name at $35 a pack.
The insurance companies are going to charge more for premiums because they will be paying a LOT more to cover birth control, and pap smears. So of course it means they will raise rates.
BUT. Think about all the money they are going to save in about a year. NOT paying for pregnancy people don't want because they could not have money to pay for the pills. This is going to be a huge game changer, in my opinion. And all the money they will SAVE by catching cancer early. Mark my words. This WILL save them money in the LONG run.

I think it will save money, too, in the long run.
It's the same reason many plans now pay for preventive care and well woman screenings at 100%, catching things early SAVES money.
My plan actually charges you a $350 a year surcharge if you don't go for your FREE preventive care visit. I think that says something big about the cost savings of preventive care

Preventing medical issues saves money. Premiums may go up as they always do but this won't be the reason.

Will only generic BCP be covered? The only one I can be on has no generic. I don't use it because I can't afford $100 a month.
