Starting cereal early at 2 months?

DS eats a lot--6 oz every feeding, for a total of between 36 and 40 oz per day. During the day he has 6 oz. of formula every 3 hours.

We have his 8 week appt tomorrow--should I ask about starting him on cereal? He now goes longer stretches sleeping at night, but his stomach is GROWLING when we do a feeding after 8 hours...And I notice him rooting even after the 6 oz, but my ped. said not to go over 6 oz...

Re: Starting cereal early at 2 months?

I wouldn't start cereal that young... to much of an increase of risk for allergies and their bellies aren't ready for it yet.

I also wouldn't put a cap to what he ate (6 ozs).... I'ma big fan of feeing on demand and how much they want.....Some babies need to eat more then 36 ounces a day....

Do what you feel is right.

I would say to give more formula rather than cereal.
Their digestive systems are still not fully developed, and unless there is a medical reason to give cereal that young (reflux...), I wouldn't chance it.

I agree with the AP. 2months is way to early to start cereal. Why can't you give him 8oz of formula if he is looking for more?

I wouldn't do it either. There are specific developmental milestones that babies have to reach before starting solids like being able to sit up mostly on their own, and being able to swallow more efficiently.

This is my thought too, but my ped. said not to go over the 6 oz. per feeding til he is older. Chat Icon I just feel horrible that his little stomach is growling. He is VERY active--constantly moving--and big; already in 6 month clothes, so maybe he just needs more food...Chat Icon

I fed DS on demand, if he is looking feed him. Worst case he spits it up. I gave DS cereal at 9 weeks in his bottle, he was ok with it. I stopped after a week becasue he was super gassy. By 12 weeks he was on cereal on a spoon and loving life.

I agree with everything above and would do the same myself.

Worse case-he'd be spitting up and cranky from overfeeding, then you'd know to pull back.

Here is my theory, take it or leave it Chat Icon

Pediatricians are great to GUIDE us as parents but what they say isn't set in stone.

YOU and ONLY YOU know your child best... if your baby is hungry and you think he wants more... FEED HIM............ Babies DO NOT overeat at that age......

Did the ped even give a reason as to why he can't have more?? I'm curious to hear the response!

If he's already in 6 mos clothing then he's a big boy and needs to eat more...

Feed him as much as he wants... Watch how much happier he will be! Chat Icon

Re: Starting cereal early at 2 months?

You're gonna get a lot of comments like the above (I certainly did). I was in the EXACT same boat. At 8 weeks, my DS was having 46oz a day. I wanted to try cereal badly. At 9 weeks there were 3 days where DS had no joke over 50oz. Enough was enough. At 10.5 weeks I did start cereal (slowly and gradually) and at 12 weeks my DS was eating it twice a day. At 13 weeks I started him on fruits & veggies (PED said no problem when she heard how much formula he was taking AND he had great neck control). Now at 7 mos he has 3 meals a day and now only has between 24-32 oz a day. Honestly, I went with my gut. I'll probably get flamed but it worked for me. FM if you want any advice. I def. know where you are coming from.

Landon was the same way. He was off the charts for weight and height. He drank about 40 oz a day. When we started cereal at approx 4 months, the amount of formula did not decrease anyway!

I almost did, but I was scared by all of the comments i received. I started the day he turned 3 months. I should've done it sooner...he was a big eater from the beginning... i say go with your gut...Chat Icon

DS eats a lot--6 oz every feeding, for a total of between 36 and 40 oz per day. During the day he has 6 oz. of formula every 3 hours.

that is the strangest thing i've ever heard. DS was easily taking 8-9 oz. at once point.

first off all cereal isn't going to fill his tummy. it's usually only added to help with reflux.

secondly at that age he still has the tongue-thrust reflex and feeding him cereal from a spoon just won't work. cereal is really only used for practice when a baby (between 4 and 6 months) is learning to eat food.

definitely add more to each bottle during the day. i still cannot believe your ped said to not give him more than 6 oz. even if he is hungry.

I agree with PPs. If he's still hungry, add more formula. I'd hold off on the cereal for as long as you can. Chat Icon
