Starting clomid next cycle if it doesnt work???
So, next month will be a year of TTC. I am starting clomid next cycle and progesterone. How many cycles does your dr wait to see if clomid works? My DH sperm has not been tested yet.

Usually an RE suggests having a Semen Analysis done at the beginning of your treatment to know they are treating the right thing. It is suggested that a person take no more than 6 cycles of Clomid, it starts to thin out the uterine lining which is not condusive to implantation.

Re: Starting clomid next cycle if it doesnt work???
My doctor did not suggest a semen sample. I am doing everything through my OBGNY. Should I be going to a specialist?

I also started taking clomid with my OBGYN but after starting my 3rd cycle and have not had any monitoring we decided to move foward with an RE. An RE does more intensive monitoring and bloodwork. What you want is to be monitored during your cycle.

absolutely. i would never recommend clomid with an ob/gyn unless they agree to monitor you closely. if they dont then you wont have a good idea if clomid is doing anything for you. my ob/gyn gave me clomid and no further instruction. i never went back to her and went straight to an RE. it was a good thing cause clomid did absolutely nothing for me and i wouldve wasted time and energy thinking it was working when it wasnt. an RE will monitor you so you'll know about a week after taking it if it's effective. if its not some REs will prescribe a larger dose, others will move on to other treatments. it depends on your d/x and the doctor. good luck!

Re: Starting clomid next cycle if it doesnt work???
I would do the SA first too. Is your Dr monitoring you? My regular OBGYN originally put me on clomid, but was going to monitor me.
You really need to be monitored b/c you don't know how your body will respond to the dosage. 100mg was too much for me so next month they lowered it to 50mg. They wouldn't have known it was too much had they not monitored me.
ETA: they need to keep en eye on your lining. Mine was thinning after just 2 cycles.

Regarding Semen Analysis, I believe that is something not covered by insurance, we paid $160 for DH SA. Check with your insurance copmany regarding fertility treatment and what is covered.

DHs ins didnt cover it so he had it done at Enzo labs. They have a coupon where if you dont have lab coverage, they give you 80% off the bill. It was only about $140 to begin with.
As for other drugs and treatments, you should call your insurance co. b/c each plan is different covers different things. For instance, mine covered drugs and monitoring only if it was with a RE.

Re: Starting clomid next cycle if it doesnt work???
it is recommended to see an RE if you are TTC a year with no success under age 35 and 6 months if you are over 35. they are much better equipped at getting you pregnant than the OB/GYN.
you should call your insurance company and ask about infertility coverage. they will usually tell you what's covered for diagnostic testing (blood work, semen analysis and other preliminary testing), IUI and then IVF. also, most of the RE's i have seen for consultations will call and confirm your coverage too. you can then ask them more details about what you would have to pay for out of pocket. for me, all diagnostic was covered as well as unlimited IUI.
IMO, just taking clomid with your OB/GYN COULD work, but you really should see a specialist so they can pinpoint the problem and set you up with an appropriate game plan.

Go see a specialist. really, don't waste your time with an OB/GYN unless they're going to monitor you throughout your cycle (bloodwork and sonos every week to see if you respond to the clomid, how many follicles you have, if you ovulate etc) IMO, taking Clomid and not being monitored properly is just a waste of your time. And yes, your DH should have an SA done - at the very least to rule him out as having a problem
i'd not waste another cycle with your GYN but go directly to an RE where you'll be seen by trained specialists who exist solely to find out why you're not getting pregnant, and to get you pregnant.
it's like going to a regular dr for plastic surgery.. sure they 'can' do it, but its not their specialty..
and every insurance co is different - some cover everything infertility related, some only cover certain things. You should call yours to see what is covered and if you need to be pre-certified before going to see an RE
good luck!

Re: Starting clomid next cycle if it doesnt work???
I also agree with going straight to an RE, they will monitor you very closely especially while on the clomid. someone on here advised me of that when I was going to my OB/GYN for infertility and IUIs, now I go to an RE and could see just how much more monitoring they do, they specialize in this, so this is all they do, you will feel so much better about your treatment. As far as your DHs SA, it depends on your insurance, call your insurance company, I know mine has 100% infertility coverage which is great, also some of the preliminary infertility tests are covered by most insurance companies....good luck

Re: Starting clomid next cycle if it doesnt work???
Ask your OB/GYN if they will monitor you. Mine does. I am on my 2nd cycle and have been monitored the entire time. Some Drs will so don't just assume that they are going to.
But your DH should definitely have the SA done. My dr wouldn't start us on the clomid/IUI until he had the SA and I had an HSG.
