Starting injectables...please explain the process
What CD do you normally start injectables?
If you are just starting, do you go for CD3 testing first and then the RE decides your protocol for that month? Do you get the meds right away or do you start the following month?
I know nothing about it although the RE mentioned that it may be a possibility. I'm waiting for AF to show so I can call for another round of CD3 testing so it it possible to start the injectables right away this month?
I'm very new to this and very confused.
Thanks!

usually you go for CD3 and start the protocol that day or the next day.
injectables arent as big a deal as they seem before you do them. once you get used to them its not that bad.
many REs first injectable protocols are a combo of pills (clomid/femara) with injects (gonal-f/follistim).
just make sure you know what your insurance coverage is on injectables since they arent always the same as regular meds, depends on your plan.
good luck! are you doing IUI or timed intercourse?

Thanks! I'm assuming we are doing timed intercouse, we haven't discussed IUI yet. Unfortunately, this is my last month with infertility coverage, so I'd do anything to increase my chances for this month.

if thats the case then when you get your meds get as much as you can. ask the doctor if he can order for several cycles. that way you dont have to get refills and if you continue to see an RE at least you wont have to pay for the meds. depending on your d/x in general IUI increases your chances about 8% over timed intercourse.

flowerwife, what is the purpose of doing both clomid/femara and injectibles in one cycle? just to increase number of eggs for women who do not respond well to clomid by itself? what is the number of eggs ( average) ppl produce on that protocol?

It really depends on the person and how they respond to the drugs. For me, I produced no mature follicles on femara so that's why I use the injections too. I produce anywhere from 3-5 follicles on that protocol.
A person could be on the same protocol as me and develop 1 or 2 follicles OR hyperstim and produce way more.
Do you concur, flowerwife?

depending on d/x the addition of injectable FSH almost always produces SOME response in people that dont respond to clomid/femara alone. in many of us it also increases quantity of mature eggs. more eggs = more chances of one fertilizing and sticking.
when i first started treatment (after a failed clomid cycle) we went to a femara/follistim combo, and i know a lot of different REs do various pill/FSH combos. technically we conceived 2 of 3 times on the femara/follistim protocol, but both were chemical. after that i went to purely injectable cycles with follistim and ganirelix (both of which were BFN).
im def not sure about this, but my best guess would be that mixing the femara/clomid with the FSH allows a little less FSH to be used because the femara/clomid assists with follicle development and selection. i know clomid/femara result in the body producing more FSH, then if you add the fast-acting injectable FSH combined should result in increased follicular development, especially in women that are anovulatory for reasons other than high FSH. i think high FSH would demand a different protocol and prob bypass femara/clomid altogether. but like i said thats only my guess, maybe someone else has better insight into this.
as far as number of follies - it varies widely by person, RE, and protocol. even the same protocol on the same person results can vary widely cycle to cycle. i would think the goal is to have 2-3 mature follies to trigger. anything more increases risk of multiples (but also increases chances of it working), anything less lowers the chances of conception.
for me (I have PCOS), i have always been a quick responder, in many cases too quick and I produce too many eggs for comfortable TI/IUI cycles. thats what ultimately led me to IVF.
