Starting to get concerned with DD gross motor skills....

DD is 8 months old (today) and she is showing no signs of crawling or pulling to a stand or figuring out how to pull herself up after she falls over from a seated position. I feel like these are things she should be doing or atl east show signs of starting to do.
When she is on her stomach she will push up with extended arms and lift her chest of the floor but only for a limited amount of time and then pretty much just rolls over so she doesn't have to be on her stomach. She rolls all over the place but that is it.
I am not concerned at all with her fine motor/hand-eye coordination skills or social/speech/eye contact skills but I am starting to get concerned with her gross motor skills.
When people at work ask me if she is crawling and doing other gross motor skills and I say no, they give me a face about it like I am a bad mom Chat Icon
I have a doctors appointment in a month but I feel like that is so far away.
sorry I dont even know what I am looking for. I guess I just needed to vent because I had 2 more people at work give me a face today when I said she was not crawling yet. I can not stand hearing "Really, that is odd" or "Really I think she should be doing that by now "
Thanks if you read all of this.

Every child is different. If I remember correctly my DD didn't do any of those things at 8 months either. I think she started crawling (backwards by pushing with her upper body) at 9 months. You have to go with your gut and if you think there is something wrong call your doctor. From what your describing it sounds like she is pushing up and building her upper body strength. I wouldn't worry but it's easier said then done!

My DD is 7.5 months and shows no signs of crawling. She does not enjoy being on her stomach to play.

DD didn't start crawling until 9 months, its definitely on the later side, but I wasn't overly concerned. Once she got it, she took off. I wouldn't worry yet, just try to encourage her.

While babies do things at different paces, the one thing that might have me concerned it that she can't sit unsupported yet (if i read that right?). go with your gut, it could never hurt to put a call in to the ped if you are concerned.Chat Icon

DD is 8 months old thursday and she also shows no signs of crawling or pulling to stand. My ped said this would happen at 9 months. I get asked if she is crAwling all the time and i say not even close. Every baby is different and i really do not feel like she is behind at all. Some babies never even crawl. I wouldnt worry Chat Icon

DD is sitting independently. I just meant that if she occasionally falls over when she is sitting (which isnt too often) she does not try to sit back up on her own - meaning pushing herself back up to a seated position. But she can definitely sit independently for extended periods of time

Thank you everyone for responding. It makes me feel better that is not so uncommon for them not to be doing all these gross motor skills at this age. I think it is just the type of work that I do that makes others so critical about what your child is or is not doing. I will just keep doing all my "floor time work" with her and just see what happens
Thank you again

Ughh, I hate it when other people give you a look like you don't know what the he11 you're doing!
You are doing just fine. Your baby is doing just fine. My DS is also 8 months old today and he's nowhere near crawling or pulling up either. He's just rolling around all over the place. It's not even a little bit uncommon to not be crawling at 8 months. According to my Ped, most kids crawl between 7 and 9 months... some NEVER crawl at all (my DD never crawled and she's doing just fine now at 21 months). Please don't worry. Every baby is different and it sounds like your baby is on par with every other "normal" baby on the block. Chat Icon

I can't stand those 'looks' people will give you. Try not to pay them any mind. DS started scooting (army crawling) at 5 months but did not crawl on all fours until he was 10.5 months old. He is not showing any signs of trying to stand on his own, meanwhile a friends DD (who is a week younger) is already walking. Every child is an individual and develops at his/her own pace. Your DD sounds like she is just fine. Chat Icon

Re: Starting to get concerned with DD gross motor skills....

My DS was barely rolling back to tummy at 8 month and didn't crawl until about 10 months. At 11.5 months he was standing on his own, not simply pulling up but actually just standing up in the middle of the room with nothing to hold on to. He walked at 13 months 1 week. And now at 16 months, he's running. I remember being worried but try not to. Give her some time and don't listen to other people, every baby is different.

Both of my DDs did not roll over until they were 11 months old- they are super lazy! Chat Icon DD#1 never crawled- just rolled everywhere. DD#2 started crawling at 12 months old, and started pulling herself to stand shortly thereafter. Both of my DDs are fine and the ped is not concerned at all. At 8 months, I wouldn't worry. Or at least, try not to. She will be just fine! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS is 9 months and doesn't crawl yet. He also can't sit back up if he falls over by himself. Our Ped is not concerned at all. Give her some time Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is my son and he just turned 9 months. He figured out how to army crawl (but only backwards) about 1 to 1.5 months ago. He has plenty of upper body strength, but he hates to be on his belly. He figured out a few weeks ago how to go from his belly to sitting up so he never gets to practice crawling anymore. I started practicing with him pulling up to a stand, and within 2 days he got the hang of that and could pull himself up on me while holding my hands. In just a few more days he could pull himself up on his activity table and music table. Now he's cruising.

Once they get the hang of it, it all happens kind of quick. I'm not really concerned about the crawling anymore, he would much rather be standing. I think he will walk first.

That being said, try and give her a little time. If you're really concerned and think that something is wrong, trust your instincts and speak to the ped. I was very concerned a month ago, but once I stopped focusing on the crawling and helped him with the pulling up to a stand, he started to "get it". I think some babies need to be shown, and helped a little along the way. Chat Icon
