state not paying back taxes
my friend did her taxes online and was getting a substantial amount back from the state. she received an email from the state telling her that they cannot refund her the money and that it might take up to 3 years to get her refund. holy crow

I don't think that's legit. I am pretty sure the state would send a letter not an email about something like that.
Any chance it was a phishing email offering a refund anticipation loan?

California is so screwed financially. They will be the first state to declare bankruptcy... if that will ever be possible.
And yes I have read the same reports about CA and taxes refunds. But I didn't hear three years.

That sucks for her. Maybe she's just unlucky or there are other factors. I know people who already filed and didnt get a notice like this.

I haven't heard anything like this either and we are getting about $600 back. I'll let you know in ten days wether I got it or not.

Well that's odd. I'm due a refund of almost 3k and according to their site, it's to be deposited tomorrow. I think your friend got a letter from someone potentially trying to scam her. I hope she wasn't required to call a number (or go online) and give her social security number out.

My father is an accountant. He has had his own side business for years and during tax season in his retirement, he heads an H&R Block office. I just got off the phone with him and he hasn't heard of this at all. He said that it's possible the state will be slow / delay in paying refunds, but the expected delay is only up to 8 weeks. No one is talking about 3 years, and he's not aware of anyone receiving emails like this. He also said that, despite the fact that they ask for your email address, communications like that would come in the form of an actual, mailed letter, not an email.
If you can post the text of the letter (obviously ommitting any information about your friend), he said he can look into it. He is going to ask the tax preparers in his office if any of their clients have received state refunds yet or received letters like this.
He said it's likely a scam, especially if the email provided a link to the "state" web site asking you to enter your personal information. Additionally, she can check her NY State refund status here.

FYI, just checked my bank account and my refund is there. I filed about 3 weeks ago, so there was no significant delay.

i hope its not true too although i mostly pay state i'm hoping it doesn't ring true for federal because we depend on that money!!

federal and state are usually delayed because some people who owe money have until 4/15 to pay and don't pay until then.
