State Tests - how did your school perform?
Just curious how your school performed and what your feelings are looking at these results?
I live out east and I just looked at the scores for 4 schools in our area and they were 58% and up for NOT meeting NYS standards. I only checked a couple of schools to see how many kids took the tests but the results are pretty shocking.

State Tests - how did your school perform?
Our district had an 81% opt out rate. So of course the numbers are going to be grossly skewed.

Re: State Tests - how did your school perform?
My DS was in third grade and his school scored 62% meeting standards in ELA and 58% in math. We have a total of 5 elementary schools and our overall average was 66% ELA and 55% Math. His personal scores were 86% in ELA and 96% in Math.

I was going to say this as well - the school DS is going to is considered a good school and the results for 3rd grade ELA were about 50/50 but, I know a lot of people opted out.

I won't even look as it means nothing due to the huge opt out rates, and we plan to opt out and hopefully enough others will until they do away with this bullshitt

State Tests - how did your school perform?
We didn't get individual results yet but I think our school did well. Our ELA was a little lower but we have some kids that English is not their first language so I think sometimes that skews the results a little.

Re: State Tests - how did your school perform?
Totally skewed since saying 68-70 kids of over 140 probably kids took test (Had a 55+ percent opt out rate). The only thing I was interested is most kids in my son's class too the test (20/25 took test or so - it is an advanced class) so I figure a lot of the score is his class. With a 65+% rate of 3's and 4's - I'm gonna assume he did well. Didn't get individual scores yet and have been curious to how he did.

Re: State Tests - how did your school perform?
89% meets expectations for math Looks like 68% meets expectation for ELA. Thought math would be lower

This is so not the message in our district. I think depends on the area in which you live. The tests are changing because of a new company but for now they are here to stay. Our district uses the tests - they definitely don't mean "nothing" and we have a very very small opt-out. Our Superintendent recently went pretty in depth about the demographics of the opt out communities as well as the students. It was interesting and kind of sad.

Re: State Tests - how did your school perform?
Thought this was interesting too. It blew up on my FB feed right before school started because I am friends with Mr Hynes on FB- he was a friend of my DH's from High school actually. He's been getting a lot of press ,and a lot of praise, for this letter he sent to his teachers before school started. He seems like a great superintendent, and though this is not my district, I wish it was.

I think your Superintendent is conning you into believing these tests mean something, and also making you believe some sort of hogwash about the demographics. keep drinking the Kool Aid
IME, most parents that care about their kids educations, and are highly involved ARE the parents that are opting out

State Tests - how did your school perform?
I looked at the scores and they didn't seem too bad.
At back-to-school night, my son's teacher admitted that she is a big advocate of Common Core method. She's a fan. I was surprised to hear this, as all I hear is negative things.
She explained (lightly) some of the reasons why. She did say she didn't like some of the way it was thrust on /introducted to everyone, but overall, she believes in the method. She is also a mom with kids in the district and she is one of those teachers that really lives and breathes teaching, you can just tell. Like there are teachers and there are TEACHERS, you know? I'm in a wonderful district and I trust her opinion.
I think they are all in such a growth period right now and this is all trial and error. I woudn't put that much stock into it. At least not yet.

State Tests - how did your school perform?
You can be pro Common Core and anti testing. Common Core, while I do not understand the math and I never will does have some good parts. Most of the administrators I deal with and teachers as well do not oppose the Common Core itself. It is the testing that is the problem. They tests are not a reflection on what is being taught. They are testing on a curriculum that has not been properly rolled out to the masses and they are basing half the teachers evaluations on one unfair test that was not even written by educators. Do you think that teachers (no matter how much they say they don't want too) will want any under preforming kids in their class. They will be fighting to get the top tier to make sure they keep their jobs and I don't blame them at all. The tests and linking them to teachers is going to cause a major problem down the road. They are taking away any accommodations that special needs students need to pass the test. They will be forcing students to take the tests on their functional age and not their development age. That is child abuse to a special needs student. These tests are taking away all power from the district themselves and giving it to the government and that is exactly what Cuomo wants. That is why people are opting out, not because of the curriculum. Any superintendent that is telling their district any different is blowing smoke up you know where.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. I meant that it's sad that I do feel in part that this testing is widening the gap. It should be a fair playing field. In the districts that are not opting out the kids are doing decent because in part of tons of money thrown around to tutors and prep programs obviously not everyone can afford to do this and that is what I meant. Also generally in the more affluent districts you see less opt out and better performance. Finally it isn't the kids that are outperforming on these tests that are being told to opt out. I think I am going to leave it at that. This board has a very one sided view when it comes to the reality of these tests and unfortunately the view presented to be main stream isn't the case in every district. Moreover in the past information presented as factual was completely and utterly false. I don't think these tests are all bad and my child will be taking them this year along with 95 percent of his peers. Unfortunately these days a lot of his academic future will be determined by tests and having him opt out after spending an entire year preparing is really the wrong message for me to send to him. He is smart and I know my district will prepare him well and he will be fine like many if not most of his peers.
