Statistics on Corona
For those that believe that Corona has been here for a lot longer than we think, why do you think that there weren't the high amount of hospitalizations and deaths until recently? That's the one thing that is confusing to me. If so many people had it in January/February, why were the hospitals not overwhelmed with pneumonia patients the way they are now? And why weren't there so many pneumonia related deaths? I do believe that it was here before it was reported but I can't wrap my brain around people thinking so many people were walking around with it, asymptomatic, but we didn't have the hospitals completely overwhelmed with patients and the bodies piling up.

I think it was here - I know many who were sick this winter with severe illness but, tested negative for flu. I know they are hoping at least that it was Covid-19 so we are closer to herd immunity.
I am sure many of the hospital admits for pneumonia were actually this.
I feel that there were many asymptomatic people.
But, I feel that it wasn't as widespread as it is now.

I feel like it was here early on also. I know it was in China in December. I heard them talking about it on Talk Radio in December. So, it only takes a plane ride for others to become infected. I know many people that were sick and on steroids for severe respiratory illnesses at the beginning of the year. I think February break compounded it, maybe. More people together, MANY more people traveling due to school break.

I think that because it is a slippery virus that rapidly multiplied and morphed. It is my opinion, but I think that because it keeps multiplying to attack different organs and younger segments of the population. I'm definitely not an expert or a medical professional. It is just an opinion.

Because people were hospitalized for other things and deaths were not all categorized as Covid 19. I know a ton of people who were sick in December, January and February and the ones that went to the doctor were told they were negative for the flu. Others just got over it. Most likely because they didn’t have underlying issues that many others now have and are passing away from.

I don’t think they were diagnosing it and then and I think it spread very quickly. I mean they traced I think 40 or 50 people back to that attorney in Westchester who worked in Manhattan. My colleague had pneumonia back when it was still big in China and we weren’t hearing about it as much here so we speculate it was Coronavirus

I think it was here too. My SIL was in ICU with double pneumonia. My brother had the worst cough for 3 weeks that made him black out a few times. Our entire staff got really sick all within 2 weeks. Me and another had a cough that wouldn’t quit for weeks after. One employee wound up with pneumonia and was hospitalized. The only person who didn’t get sick was a woman who wears a mask while working I bleach and lysoled everything after whatever the sickness was that went through.
I think there wasn’t wide spread deaths and hospitalizations Bc it was just the beginning. Do we really believed the 1.5 months we’ve known about it was the only time it was around? So many had almost no symptoms. Then the long incubation, etc.
It’s been here. I can’t wait for an antibody test. I’m sooooo curious

It just seems like in the past 5 weeks there was a HUGE increase in hospital admissions no matter what way you slice it and that to me is odd if it has really been lingering around for month, just based on the way it seemed to spread.
I also for the life of me can not understand how so many people are still contracting it. Are they all essential works or people that live in group/nursing homes and have contact with many people? Like how are there still so many admissions? I have been in the middle of no where upstate new york and people up here have been taking things pretty seriously for at least a month now, not to mention their schools closed a week before most long island schools.

There are people who are disobeying rules and continuing to gather. I am in Rockland County and there were two large funeral gatherings today.

I wonder the same thing. If it’s not essential workers, then who’s contracting it and spreading it?
Someone I know was just exposed at work (essential) the guy called out of work and said his son tested positive so now he has to go get tested. I asked how his son got it if everyone should have been home for a month. Turns out the son has a friend who was sick and needed a ride to a testing center so he put on a mask and drove this friend and the friends mother last week to get tested. That, I think, is part of the problem. Yea, he thought he was doing a nice thing but with doing that, he put his entire family at risk and his dad works with dozens of people daily as an essential worker.

Keep in mind that on Long Island and in NYC millions of people are still working and interacting with the public every single day. The list of essential workers is quite vast. So that's probably why people are still getting sick. If they are to the point of being admitted to the hospital though, they have probably been sick for a while it's been said.

This. My entire family is essential. My parents both work at grocery stores. My brother is MTA. My other brother and BIL are NYPD. My sister is a nurse in Manhattan.
My sister’s BIL is NYPD and just tested positive and is asymptomatic. He lives with his mom who is in her late 50s. Her other BIL is also NYPD.
My other sister’s BIL is a plumber.

Yes, I don’t think people realize how deep the list of essential workers are.
My husband is an electrician and was working at essential businesses so he has only missed a week of work since this happened due to exposure. But then he went to LI to help build the temp hospital at Stonybrook. I have family that work at the shops and they have to go into the office.

It looks like they are starting to test victims that died before the "first" case on Feb 29. Now there is proof that it was in the US at least as early as Feb 6th. If they died on the 6th, they had it for a little while, so they must have brought it into the US in late January.

I think it was here. But the cases were believed to have been a strain of the flu or other respiratory ailment. We are seeing more now because the more it spreads, the more cases there are.

the percrnt of cases that turn into pneumonia is small- webmd says 15 are sever and 5% are critical ( requiring a ventilator) but because there are so many total cases, the actual total of hospitalizations is large, so back when it was just starting, there may have been more pneumonia hospitalizations, but it wasn't as noticeable as a new trend- especially if these early patients had it form traveling and there weren't clusters yet.
as for people still getting it, it can be household members-- Chris Cupmo's wife was diagnosed weeks after he was.
The ones I hear on the news are often medical, transit, police, fire, and grocery workers.
I think 20% of the police in my town were diagnosed at some point.
That is really interesting. Knowing now how contagious it is, it seems strange that it would take form December to February to reach the US considering how common bussines travel to China is.

Exactly, and apparently without social distancing it has an extremely steep curve, which is why I find it hard to reconcile thinking it could have been around for months without our hospital system being completely overwhelmed way earlier on.

I’m not saying it wasn’t here a few weeks prior to us identifying it but all of this “I had a bad respiratory infection so it had to be corona” is driving me nuts. There are always different viruses going around, people got pneumonia and respiratory illnesses long before this.
Also, the flu test is not terribly reliable. Just because you tested negative for the flu, it could still have been influenza.
