Re: Stem cell research

I think there's a lot of media hype in both directions. I don't really know. I have some ethical issues with it beyond the pro life thing. It's not about embyros that get thrown out. It's about the thought of using those cells, I don;t know how to explain, and also in some ways it feels like playing god, though I guess the first organ transplant must have felt the same way.
I'm also not sure it's the cure-all everyone is anticipating

I really do not know much about this, but from what I have read there is no solid proof that embryonic stem cell research will lead to a cure for azheimers, etc. .

But don't you need to be able to do the reseach to have solid proof

azhesimers is not the only thing it could help

my Mom had a stem cell transplant- or her OWN stem cells- that we radiated and put back in her body

but her Stem Cells were flawed and she lost her battle with Cancer- had she been able to get someone elses she would most likely be here today!

the possibilies are endless- why not do the reserach?? or course there's no solid proof now- no one is aloud to prove it!

I see it as the was the first organ transplant must have felt then too

And we wont know its the cure all unless we try ....at least thats how I see it

This is why I am against embryonic stem cell research. Every advancement made thus far has been the result of Adult stem cell research.

The sad reality is, the people that write these laws limiting research on stem cells don't know a thing about it. We are limited by stem cells that can be isolated in the adult. Being able to manipulate cells from embryos can give us a much better understanding of how cells differentiate and why.

These things must be known in order for greater things to come of it. No, there is no PROOF that it will lead to a cure of anything but there is SO much potential for it. Chance favors the prepared mind!

For it. My sister has MS, my dad has diabetes and I had to go through IVF.

It could be invaluable in the amount of knowlegde and healing it could bring.

I'm for it completely. Just knowing that there is a possibility for a cure of so many disabling and fatal diseases gives me hope. I have done the research. It does need regulation, but how much I'm not sure of. There have been so many controversial medical breakthroughs in the past. We have all benefitted from them one way or another and will continue to do so if we continue to do research.

I don't want to open a can of worms but I feel like I have to say this much.

As a researcher I work with human cell lines (not stem cells). A lot of areas of research require the use of embryonic cells, so for example, mouse embryonic fibroblasts can be used (not stem cells either), but they have a short life span in culture and provide us with less information than human cells could.

Once a stem cell line is established it is immortal, meaning this cell line can be replenished forever. I think it's worth the sacrifice of a few embryos for the good of others. There is a very limited number of embryonic cell lines available now, and although adult stem cells have been isolated they are more limited and specialized than embryonic stem cells meaning they dont have the potential to differentiate into as many different cells as embryonic cells do.

I know it's hard for people to understand, but once these lines are established they're indefinitely available. And the potential of having access to these types of cells for researchers is immeasurable.

ETS: Wanted to add!!!! These stem cells are isolated from embryos created in vitro that are only a FEW DAYS OLD! At this stage Embryos at this stage of development they do not have a nervous system, and have not developed a heart or other tissues yet. Literally, it is a ball of cells. In my honest opinion, although they have the potential to create life if implanted in a uterus, I don't feel it's immoral to use these embryos for the development of stem cells.

I agree and do you know that some people that go through IVF actually destroy their blastocysts? Just throw them away? I personally would like to see stem cell research done than that

But given the opportunity to grow, they would. Thats the issue I take with it. Its not just a ball of cells to me-it is a human enbryo that will grow into a human baby. Just because it has only grown to "a ball of cells" doesn't make it any less of a human IMO.

But if they aren't going to be placed into a uterus, then they are never going to grow into a human baby.

Therefore, why not use them for research.

When we were going through IVF, we signed a consent that they could use our arrested and discarded embryos for research that very well may help another couple concieve one day.

Re: Stem cell research

If I had my own embtos made for IVF and I wasn't using all of them I would still feel very weird about it going to research, even though it would never becoe a child, it's still a potential child with mine and DH's genetic material.

I feel weird about it. for the same reasons I would never donate eggs.I know that's different because one become a child and one doesn't, but I feel very protective of my eggs, etc

Yes, but its still a human embryo. Just because its not going to be placed into a uterus doesn't make it any different IMO.

What about the ones that are left over from IVF? They would be discarded anyway.

Yes, BUT..a big part of the media hype argument is that it's going to cure all of these diseases, and that's why it's ok, and that that should outweigh any moral pbjections people may have, but it really may never cure those diseases. We don't know what the possibilities are. It may not be worth it if it's really only a 2% chance of curing anything, as opposed to the miracle definite cure it is portrayed as by proponents

That alone is enough to make me want to try... I feel that if these embryo's would be discarded anyway and there is even a chance that it could be something big, then the research should be done.
