i believe they are either frozen or discarded. And the ones that would be discarded are the ones going to research.
I know its for eggs...I'm not sure if they are still doing it for embryos
I'm too tired to look for my consent sheets now

Right, that is the heart of the debate. What happens to the embroyos tho if they are never implanted?
I've had over 25 embryos that never implanted...
Where are they?
Right. And from what you are saying, it sounds like you would support them being used for research. If they were just discarded, what good would it do anyone? Imagine what YOUR embroyos could do for stem cell research. Pretty amazing.

I think I read that somewhere
So you are saying extra eggs can be donated... and then extra sperm can be donated... and they will create an embryo for research purposes only? I never thought of it that way, I always assumed the eggs donated were already fertilized.

Re: Stem cell research info
My friend had a procedure where his brother was a match and they did a transfusion type procedure. They were both hooked up to machines that took ones stem cells and filtered them directly into his system while they sat there. It took about 8-12 hours(not exact)

I don't think they can do that...
I think the eggs are donated for other research...I know they were working on taking out the nucleus and placing them in other eggs
But that is all fertility related
There used to be a consent about embryos, but not sure if I remember it being there lately, maybe b/c of all the stem cell debate

Re: Stem cell research info
In order for them to do any research on an embroyonic stem cell, it must be destroyed in the process. The argument is that you are "destroying life".
For me I feel an embroyo is "potential life" and if no one is going to participate in growing that embroyo to a child, it can't ever be "life".
Those fertilized eggs/embroyos that they want to use are slated for destruction anyway.

Re: Stem cell research info
I'm 100% for it. Scientists and activists who want to open up more lines for research and loosen govt restrictions on stem cell research see the enormous potential these cells have in developing cures for diseases like alzheimers, diabetes, specific types of cancers, parkinson's, etc.
A lot of the opposition to stem cell research centers around embryonic stem cell research. A lot of people (including the president) argue that by using an embryo you are destroying a human life. This goes against Bush's platform to "maintain a culture of life."
Stem cells are not just harvested from embryos - but scientists have argued that embryonic stem cells show the most promise for research.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion on the issue - I just believe that if a couple chooses to donate their unused embryos for research, they are giving an enormous gift to scientists and the millions of people who suffer from diseases.
Lifting the restrictions on stem cell research is on the democrats 2007 congressional agenda. They are introducing legislation early in the new term, hoping to capitalize on their new majority.

Re: Stem cell research info
Totally for all of it.
The research is amazing and is going to save sooo many lives we know I think in the future.
I did also like Lisa checedk to donate any unused embryos during my IVF for research.

I pray that the restrictions are lifted in the near future...it would bring a great relief to our family and I would take comfort in knowing that a disease that took my MIL and could poss take my DH would have a potential treatment or cure

They are either frozen for future use
Used in research
Donated to another person
Or discarded

And they cannot or should not be frozen for lets say 40 years, so lets say you had them there, and didnt donate to research, isisnt "throwing them away" even MORE a waste of potential human life, then using them to possible SAVE a human life?

so if people are going to discard them...
why would someone have an issue with them using them for research?
doesn't make sense to me

do couples who donate have the option of determining what is done with the left over embryos?

Re: Stem cell research info
We have 5 leftover embryos (yes, already fertilized) from my IVF procedure.
They are currently in storage but we will not be using them to hae anymore children.
We consented on our forms that they are to be used for research purposes after the storage time is up.
The issue hits close to home for me as: 1. DH ad I did produce exrta embryos. 2. My father, potentially someday, could greatly be helped by such research. His paralysis, lack of speech and sight from a stroke could potentially be restored.
Such research has the potential to bring better quality of life to countless people.

You must decide before you ever go through the IVF process.
I believe I hand to hand in all of my multi-page, notarized consent form BEFORE I was ever put on any of the drugs to help with stimulation of my ovaries.
They want all of the legal decisions made before the procedure even starts.

Yes, they make you sign and notarize a paper with all your choices. We can decide if we want them donated to research and you can stipulate that as well if you want, although its not commonly done.
