STILL having eating issues
so Abby will now just NOT eat any dry food, not even with gravy on it, she sucks the gravy or chicken broth off it!
She will go 3 days, no eating and startes to dry heave
so I made a big pan of chicken breast, white rice, and peas and carrots...
Is that ok for her to eat twice a day? How much do I give her? ( cup/half cup?) shes about 10 lbs.

Re: STILL having eating issues
I'd ask the vet .......sometimes they suggest dogs eat dry food specifically for their teeth (I have a Yorkie) .......maybe she just doesn't like this particular brand ??
My Mom used to feed my Westie chicken and white rice b/c of her allergies, about 1 cup (But she only ate once a day)

Re: STILL having eating issues
Why don't you try 1/4 cup mixed really well w/ her dry food and see what happens?

I feed my dogs twice a day...how much do you usually feed her? I would give her 1/2 cup each time...if she still looks for food then you can give her more.

Re: STILL having eating issues
Ok To answer sthe questions...
We have tried it all./
We had her on castor and pollux food ( higher end brand)..she did great until just one day stoped eating it..wouldnt eat for 3 days straight, nothing, was starving for our food.
So I went and got beneful and she loved it for about a month, then would eat a few mouthfuls a day, nothing more, then NOTHING..again 3 days, wa shacking from not eating...but loves biscuits, wet food etc...
I have tried everyway POSSIBLE to mix her dry food in with anything, She will suck on it and spit the dry food out. Its kinda funny to watch but scary. I even HIDE SOME on pieces of chicken caus eIm nuts and she spits it out.
So she needs to eat.
I call the Vet and they say, we need to see her. I said you saw her recently, shes ok, can I ask why..."shes need sa full work up" ..
Well I will be 100% honest, and flame me all you want, I just had a baby, Im not working, I cannot afford it.
I have spent thousands at this vet and it irratates me that they cant answer ANY questions over the phone. She was there recently?
If I switch vets, I have to pay all over again too.
I know its my responsibility to take care of her....I just think shes picky???

Re: STILL having eating issues
Have you tried just not feeding her anything else? My vet told me that they can go for four days without eating. As long as they drink water it's okay. Some dogs don't like to eat in the hot weather. I know Misty skips meals all the time right now. I just leave the dry food in her bowl until she eats it and then resume her feeding schedule. The nice thing about just dry is that it's not going to get gross if you leave it there. I don't know what else to tell you...

Re: STILL having eating issues
My trainer said the same thing- they can go days without food.
Donna, no animal will intentionally starve itself to death. Stick to your guns, remind her that YOU are the human and the one who calls the shots.
The only other option would be for you to maybe do the raw diet- but that's ALOT of work and time consuming (but hey- you have PLENTY of time, right?).
Hey- did you get the mobile? Maddie LOVES hers...

Misty is always hungry too! We have learned to not give her ANYTHING unless she's eaten her regular food. No matter how much she begs, we don't give her treats, and she can beg.
Okay...sometimes we do give her a treat

She was on Castor and Pollux as a puppy and when she stopped eating it we switched to Beneful.
I am feeling so guilty now. NOW do I switch her BACK to the dry food?
I have put it down for her for the last week and she has not tocuhed it except for the rice and chicken I put in with it.
I am having a hard time letting her go 3-4 days without eating.
She is only 10 lbs

Re: STILL having eating issues
reggie goes thru periods of time where he will not eat his dry food at all- Do you wet the food- that seems to work for us but he still has gone 3 days without eating. I dont offer him anything else and he usually will wind up eating- he wont let him self starve...

Re: STILL having eating issues
i wouldn't bother with the vet at this point - if she's devouring all the other food with no problems except the dry, then i can't imagine that anything is medically wrong with her.
if she's eating it well, your chicken mixture sounds great. i would give a half-cup twice a day and see how she does. if she's still acting hungry try a little more.
but it sounds like a lot of work to be making that all the time...
how about some higher end wet food - do you think she would eat it? wellness makes good wet food, as do some of the other companies. i mean, i know that wet food only isn't the best for their teeth - but i agree, she has to eat, AND you have to remain sane. so if nothing else, wet food may be an okay short-term solution?

Can you try a food called Wellness. Buy a small bag with the fish and potato's and see what happens. I would also buy a can or two of the wet formula.

She was previously on Castor and pollux, its similair to wellness, a little more "natural" then that though...but she stopped eating it, and she cannot tolerate wet food of any type without getting the runs...

Re: STILL having eating issues
just saw your post above about abby getting the runs with wet food... i feel so bad, i don't know what to tell you.
i know how bad it is to deal with the runs, owen has addison's disease and because of that we have dealt with our fair share of diarrhea
here's an idea, if you haven't tried it. go with the chicken mixture for now, which she is eating and tolerating. every day mix in a VERY small amount of a good wet food, and increase it really slowly over the next 2-4 weeks.
there's a chance that if it's introduced in minute amounts, she'll eventually tolerate the wet food. it's also possible that if she gets the runs from wet food that they're only temporary - owen gets the runs from even the slightest change in his food (like one wellness flavor to another) but they only last for like a week...

well you FINALLY explained it...
You didnt mention any of this before..
But like I said in like 10 posts under this topic, she was on Castor and pollux, its an all natural food, its almost identical to wellness and she wont go near it, so forgive me for thinking going to buy another bag of dry food thats almost the same as what she just came off of will not work..
BUT...you could have just explained to me what you were trying to say rather then make it seem like you were telling me the food my dog IS NO LONGER ON is bad ...
I appreciate all advice I do...But you might try to spell it out a clittle clearer in future posts so people know what your talking about instead of taking offense. I made it clear she wasnt eating beneful....shes not eating anything but rice and chicken and groudn turkey and I just simply wanted to knwo how much to feed her of it....
P.s theres a lot of people on here who use beneful and there dogs do great on it....

I will try this. I tried today to add some pretty good wet food to her breakfest( rice mixture) ..
OMG what a mess we had today
Poor DH had to re bathe her cause of the runs..
I see the Vet again in Sept. for a shot for her, so maybe we will discuss more then, hopefully can just continue with the rice and chicken till then with no issues.
I feel bad for her too, she gets sooooo excited to eat and then stares at it in such annoyance and I pity how hungry she looks.
