Stucco House

How do you feel about them?
DH and I came across one and the interior looks real nice and clean. We are probably going to look at it this weekend. My mom's friend had a stucco house and now has problems with mold and mildew...something common amongst stucco's.

Im new to this so any insite would be great..thanks!

Re: Stucco House

I love Tudor's so I favor stucco (and brick over vinyl siding)...I have never heard of the mold issues. What is the reason for this?

Re: Stucco House

I don't know about how stucco houses used to be made, but now what they do is put up styrofoam and a kind of cement mix and then paint it and it looks like stucco ...
From what I understand it is NOT the same as real stucco and a cheap way to make a house look upgraded ..... Just what I heard, I don't know if it is 100% true ... but around Queens they have been doing them everywhere with the styrofoam/cement mix ...

Im not sure either....why I ask.
Like I said, we have a friend who just bought a house 6 months ago and now there is an issue w/mold or mildew(im not sure which one).

I like the look....its different. The inside looks nice too.
I guess if we like it enough to make an offer,..an engineer could see if there was any problems, right?

Re: Stucco House

Are there other factors with the house? Is it on a shady piece of property? My neighbor has a ton of trees onhis property and thus a big mold issue...whereas I don't have much shade at all and my house (both of ours are 1952 brick homes) is completely dry - basement and all.

Re: Stucco House

Found this, it may help explain moisture issues with synthetic stucco materials

Linky

Traditional stucco is a cement mixture used for siding, usually on Mission or other Spanish style homes. The cement is combined with water and inert materials such as sand and lime. Usually, wooden walls are covered with tar paper and chicken wire or galvanized metal screening. This framework is then covered with the stucco mixture. Sometimes, the cement mix is applied directly to specially prepared masonry surfaces.

Although stucco-sided homes became popular in twentieth century America, the concept of using cement mixtures in architecture goes back to ancient times. Wall frescoes by ancient Greeks and Romans were painted on fine-grained hard plaster surfaces made of gypsum, marble dust and glue.

Stucco techniques were elaborated by the Italians during the Renaissance and spread through Europe. This marble dust compound could be molded into decorative shapes, polished to a sheen or painted.

Many homes built after the 1950s use a variety of synthetic materials which resemble stucco. Mock stucco siding is often composed of foam insulation board or cement panels secured to the walls. Although synthetic stucco may look authentic, real stucco tends to be heavier. Walls made of genuine stucco sound solid when tapped and will be less likely to suffer damage from a hard blow. Also, genuine stucco holds up well in wet conditions. Although it is porous and will absorb moisture, it will dry easily, without damage to the structure.

One type of sythetic stucco, known as EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems), has been associated with moisure problems. The underlying wood on EIFS sided homes may suffer rot damage. However, other types of synthetic stucco are quite durable. It's always a wise to have a professional inspection before purchasing a stucco-sided home.

Re: Stucco House

Elbee, thanks!

I think that helped a lot.
This house was built in 1929 so it seems to be original stucco house.

We'll see, going to look this weekend and hey, it could be a bust if the inside isnt all it looks like in pictures...then we are out Chat Icon

Re: Stucco House

no problem! :) DH & I love the look also, but then when we found out all these renovations were being done by builders in a way to keep costs down we looked into it and found out what's been going on ... it's just something to be aware of when inspecting a house.

Re: Stucco House

I am from CA and almost every house was stucco and I have never heard of this mold issue. The only downfall I kow of is that the stucco does not hold up very well here because of the weather.

We bought an original stucco house built in the 1920s and there are no problems with mold at all.

Re: Stucco House

We have had our house stuccoed (proper spelling?). It looks absolutely beautiful and there are NO mold issues. We had it done approx. 5 years ago. I
personally HATE siding and I'm not a big fan of brick (only certain colors), Stone only looks nice in small doses (again IMO). However, stucco is VERY expensive...much more so than siding. But you never have to clean it (like siding), or point it (like bricks). I just love how it looks!!! I would NEVER live in any other kind of house...it'll always be stucco for me! Chat Icon

Did you mean paint? Honestly, I would never paint a brick house. My house is brick -built in 1952- and I wouldn't dream of painting it. Has never been sealed either...

No...point. Bricks need to be pointed after some years when the mortar in between the bricks starts to chip away. A mason has to fill in the gaps between the bricks where the old mortar had been. It is called pointing and can be costly.

I have an inflatable pool for the kids!!! We'll probably put in a pool when the boys get older (I'm too scared right now to do it). Does this mean our deal is on hold for a few years?Chat Icon
