I think it's a dumb idea. I also hope these schools ramp up security during that time. Scheduled walkout, mass crowd on the lawn, disturbed person with a gun....I dunno.

Honestly the kids are never safe because disturbed people have access to guns. What makes the walkout any different than recess, dismissal time, footballgames?

Probably the same reason people are targets at marches, etc. People who are against what these people are protesting want to harm them. I dunno...doesn't seem like a bright idea to me.

I saw this and thought it was even better:

Instead of walking out...encourage students to walk up. To walk up to a kid who sits alone at lunch, and invite them to your group. walk up to kid who sits quietly in the corner of the room and sit next to them, smile and say "hi", walk up to a kid who causes disturbances in class, and ask how they are doing. Walk up to your teachers and thank them. Walk up to someone who has different views than you and get to know them. You may be surprised at how much they have in common, Build a foundation instead of casting stones. I challenge students to find 14 students and 3 adults to walk up to and say something nice in honor of those that dies n Florida.

No reason why they can't do both.

Are your districts planning on doing the walkout on March 14? I read that a few districts approved it but there is a lot of controversy surrounding it. Some of the parents are threatening to sue if they do it and the teachers walk out as well. But then, if hundreds of kids walk out with no supervision, that doesn’t seem right to me either. One parent went so far as to post on FB that he wants the kids to take pictures of any teacher or admin who comes out to protest or even supervise and he will name them in a lawsuit.

Omg that last part is pretty dumb IMO

Walk outs took place in the 60s and 70s and had epic influence. If its peaceful and brief and coordinated i see nothing wrong with it. Id rather my kids learn about movements and action and their voices being heard in large #s to influence change than sit for a standardized State test.

Yup. Mine already do this. The middle school participates in Rachels Challenge and both my girls were part of the organizing group in their middle school. Neither tolerates any kind of bullying nor does the school. Kindness is taught and practiced. My older won an 8th grade award for Kindness and I was more proud than if she had won a Math or Science award. My younger one was chosen by the AP to lead a diversity club.

Even so, I 100% approve and support a walkout for change in policies like restrictions on AR-15s.

I’m so glad I haven’t heard any of this from my sons school. With the snow storm and his test being postponed and extended to next week, he needs to not miss anymore days of school. His schedule is all out of wack already. I also believe this isn’t doing anything and just wasting a school day, American kids are already behind in schooling compared to other countries.

It won't accomplish anything.

If anyone thinks lawmakers care about kids walking out for 20 mins, they are delusional. The parents in my district all seem to be against it and have been posting in our districts FB group that their kids have been instructed not to participate.

I think most kids would want to participate just because you get to walk out of class for 20 mins. The kids that are actually trying to make a difference are going to learn a sad lesson about how our government really doesn't give a shit. Look at the BLM movement. The protests were much longer than 20 mins and barely accomplished anything at all.

What about walkouts in the 60s and 70s? You don’t think they did anything?

Our schools are having an activity around this, but not outdoors. They didn't want to have the entire student body outside of the school at the coordinated time. They deemed it too risky. They are allowing the kids to acknowledge what's going on, and to participate within the buildings.

Our district as well. They will be holding forums at the JHS and HS level to discuss the events and address concerns. They will also be holding a moment of silence and reading aloud the names of the Parkland victims. They aren't doing anything at the elementary level, of course.

As for the walkout, my feeling is that no change has ever come about without someone, somewhere making noise. I don't think a walkout is stupid. I think if handled correctly it can be a really excellent teachable moment for the kids. Instead of trying to circumvent it, I think school administration should be encouraging students to use their voice and take this opportunity to teach them about peaceful protest and being heard.

You think spending a day talking about something that affects their safety in school is a waste of a day?? I couldn’t disagree more.

I think discussing their thoughts, fears, ideas for the future (especially at the HS level where they’re so close to college/voting/career age) is a very appropriate way to spend an hour or 2.

Exactly. Maybe the problem is that our society focuses TOO much on grades and keeping up and not enough on lifeskills and real life topics

I think this is not going to happen in a walk out, I doubt people are going to spend a day talking about these issues. I also strongly believe this isn't going to resolve or do anything in helping the core issue. So yea, I want my 4th grader in school where he belongs.

ETA: You want to be happy your district is participating, good. I am happy my sons school is not. To each their own.

Yes I focus on grades and want my son to have good grades. Grades got me to where I am at today - so it is important to me and in my house I want my son to be educated. I can also guarantee you he gets enough life skills and is well rounded than most 9yr olds his age. He doesn't need to walk out of school for something he really doesn't understand or can grasp to gain life skills.

This is wonderful. What district are you in?

I agree with others that this is an incredibly important lesson, much more important than anything that can be taught in a classroom that day, regardless of where the child/parents stand on the issue, regardless of whether or not anything comes of it.

I didnt know he is 9 years old! Honestly when you mentioned him missing a test it sounded like he was in high school!!

I doubt they are walking out at that age. I am assuming its high schools which my DD is in and I do believe this is important for her to understand.

Our super sent a letter today saying middle and high school would participate if they so chose and there would also be other activities that day to raise awareness and duscussion, and the elementary schools would focus on lessons in kindness, respect, etc.

My sons school goes up to 8th grade. But we just received letters about safety.

ETA: They had their state wide tests last week and 2 days got pushed to this week. It's like the longest week and the snow just made it longer, so I just want these state tests to be over with already.

I guarantee you every HS social studies class will discuss it or has discussed it. Just like elections, 9/11, terrorist acts...they sometimes stray from the curriculum to cover important current events. IMO this is a ton more important and relevant to their actual lives than a topic from 1850’s European history.
I also think most participating schools are HS level. Most 4th graders aren’t picking up and marching out of the building.

I think it’s kids trying to do something. Yes, I’m sure there are kids who just want to get out of math class, but most of these kids are too young to vote, think they’re too young to be heard, and this is something they can do. Will it accomplish anything? Probably not. But I don’t think we should discourage them from trying.

ITA

I haven't read the responses, but I agree with this. At my age, I know it won't accomplish much, but my DS's school is participating and my DS decided to do it, as his way to express his voice that way. And to be honest, I'm proud of him, that he is aware and he wants to be heard. Initially it was only middle schoolers who were going to walk out, but a boy from elementary school asked for other grades to be able to participate. His letter was very deep and emotional and I love that kids can express themselves... even if in ways we know won't do much.

100% Agree. My DD is 14 in 8th grade. They are giving the kids the option and I am leaving it up to her and I hope she does it. Really at this age they don't have a vote and they need a voice. If this is a way for them to use their voice then do it. Yes, I know it's not really going to make a difference to law makers but it will make a difference for the way the kids feel. They need to feel they have some kind of control, some kind of power and can contribute in what is happening.

His schedule is all out of wack already. I also believe this isn’t doing anything and just wasting a school day, American kids are already behind in schooling compared to other countries.

Ok I don’t understand your point. I never said it can’t be discussed in school, I just said I don’t agree with the walkout and glad my sons school isn’t participating. His school goes to 8th grade and their are middle schools who are participating. Talking current events in school for 30-60 minutes is one thing, walking out is a whole separate things.

My son has had lock down drills several times a year since he was in kindergarten, so this has been discussed already.

One parent went so far as to post on FB that he wants the kids to take pictures of any teacher or admin who comes out to protest or even supervise and he will name them in a lawsuit.

This is the type of parent that makes me want to revisit the issue of why we should also require licenses to reproduce. Total idiot.

My SD sent home a notice saying that, while they respect the students rights to walk out, they are not encouraging it due to safety concerns.
